How to install Android ADB and Fastboot drivers on a MAC [Guide]

If you own and Android device and you also happen to be a power user of Android you must have heard of this term “Android ADB and Fastboot”.

ADB stands for Android debug bridge that acts as a bridge between your phone and your computer whenever you are going to establish a connection while Fastboot is the term used to perform operations in your phone’s bootloader and load custom recoveries, custom kernels and flash other similar things. The device is booted up in “Fastboot” mode and then it gets connected with the PC to perform the Fastboot operations.

Alright, I guess that was enough to start with. Setting up Android ADB and Fastboot on a windows pc is pretty much easy, but you may get confused when you own an Android smartphone and your computer is a MAC. While there’s a serious conflict between Apple and it’s greatest rival Google because of the mainstream products iOS and Android, it may seem impossible for a while, but wait. That’s actually possible and easy as well.

I just got a chance to setup Android ADB and Fastboot on my MAC recently and I’m going to cook up the detailed guidance provided by the screenshots in the following post. In case you’ve been looking for ADB and Fastboot for MAC, you may have spotted the right place. Let’s go ahead and install the drivers now.

How to install Android ADB and Fastboot drivers on a MAC

First of all, make a new folder on your MAC’s desktop or anywhere else where you can easily locate it and name it as “Android”.
Download Android SDK tools for MAC or ADB_Fastboot.zip (if you don’t want complete tools).
As soon as the SDK download ends, extract the data from adt-bundle-mac-x86 to the “Android” folder you created on your desktop.
Once the folder is extracted, find a file named as “Android”, it should be a Unix executable file.
When the Android file opens up, you need to check that Android SDK and Android SDK Platform-Tools are selected.
Click on the install package now and wait for the download to finish.
Once the download is finished, go to the “Android” folder on your desktop and open the platform-tools folder within it.
Now in platform-tools select “adb” and “fastboot”, copy both these and paste into the root of your “Android” folder.
That’s all with the ADB and Fastboot installation. We are going to test the drivers now if they are working properly or not.
To do so, enable USB debugging mode on your device. You can do so by going to settings > developer options > USB debugging. In case you don’t see the developer options, you will have to enable these. To do so, go to settings > about device > tap the build number for 7 times and find the developer options in settings then.
Now connect your Android device to your MAC. Make sure that you’re using original data cable.
Now open Terminal Window on your MAC form Applications > Utilities.
Type cd and then the path where you saved your Android folder, as shown below

.cd/Users/<yourusername>/Desktop/Android
Press enter key now so that it access the “Android” folder.
Now you need to enter the “adb” or a “fastboot” command to verify the proper functionality of your newly installed drivers. You may type the following command:

./adb devices
This will list the devices connected with the MAC. To perform the Fastboot commands you will first boot your device into Fastboot mode and perform your desired function.
As soon as you press enter after typing the above command, you will some logs running in the command terminal. If it states as “daemon not working, starting it now on port 5037 / daemon start successfully”, that means the drivers are working perfectly.
It will also show your device’s serial number in the command terminal.
Although the ADB and Fastboot drivers are completely functional now, but using “cd” and putting a “./” before every fastboot and adb command may seem annoying at times. We’ll add it to the path so that we don’t have to type both these before the adb and fastboot commands.
Open the Terminal Window once again and issue this command now

.nano ~/. bash_profile
Issuing this command will open a nano editor window.
Now you need to add a line containing the path to your Android folder in the Terminal Window. That should be like this

export PATH=${PATH}:/Users/<yourusername>/Desktop/Android
Once added, press CTRL + X on your keyboard to close the nano editor now, and then press Y to confirm the editing.
Once closed nano editor, you may close the terminal window now.
To verify that the path is successfully added or not, open the terminal window again now and issue the following command
adb devices
You will find that it will list the connected devices while you didn’t type any cd or ./ before the command.
Boom! That’s all. You’ve successfully installed Android ADB and Fastboot drivers on your MAC.
You may get your desired .img files, that you will flash in the fastboot mode. The commands will be followed by “fastboot” instead of adb, and the .img files will be placed in the root folder or in the platform-tools folder, it depends on what directory your terminal is accessing for the fastboot commands.

Samsung made this move much late as it updated the Korean variant of the same device to the latest and greatest version of Android 4 months ago. Also, make sure that you turn off any antivirus software you’ve installed and also disable firewall to avoid any connection and flashing issues.

How To Update Galaxy Note 3 Neo N750 To Android 4.4.2 KitKat Official Firmware:

Downloads Required:

Download and extract Odin3 v3.09.
Download and Install Samsung USB drivers .
Download and extract firmware file INU-N750XXUCNG6-20140819140755.zip

Method:

Wipe your device complete in order to attain a neat installation.
Open Odin3.exe.
Put your Galaxy Note 3 Neo in download mode. To do so, turn it off and wait for 10 seconds. Turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Down + Home Button + Power Key simultaneously, You should see a warning, press Volume Up to continue. In case this method doesn’t work for you, try one from this guide.
Connect your device to your PC.
As soon as Odin detects your phone, the ID:COM box should turn blue. Make sure that you’ve installed Samsung USB drivers before connecting.
For Odin 3.09 hit the AP tab. Select the firmware.tar.md5 or firmware.tar, that you downloaded and extracted above.

Update Sony Xperia M2 D2303, D2306 To Official Android 4.4.2 KitKat 18.3.C.0.37 Firmware

Xperia M2 LTE and LTE A with the model number D2303 and D2306 has started receiving a new Android update. Surprisingly this update is based on Google’s all new Android 4.4.2 KitKat and the build number is 18.3.C.0.37. Xperia M2 initially ran on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and despite being busy with Sony’s next flagship, the Xperia Z3, Sony is still managing to bring all the latest updates for its existing devices on time.

The new update is rolling out to different users through OTA or through Sony PC companion and as usual, these updates will hit different regions with some variations in the time. For Android enthusiasts, who can’t wait for the update to reach through OTA or through Sony PC companion, the only way to install the latest firmware in this case it flash the ftf file through Sony Flashtool.

We’ve found and compiled up the generic/unbranded firmware ftf files, the Android 4.4.2 KitKat with the build number 18.3.C.0.37 and compiled up a complete guide in the succeeding post that will help you to get your device running this official firmware. Let’s go through the firmware details and then head towards the installation guide.

6. Use OEM data cable to establish connection.

Make sure that you use the phone’s original data cable to establish connection between your phone and the PC. Using a different data cable might result in interrupting the firmware installation.

How To Install Android 4.4.2 KitKat 18.3.C.0.37 Official Firmware On Sony Xperia M2 D2303/D2306:

Before moving forward, please make sure that you’ve read the pre requisites and ensure that you are set to go ahead.
Download the latest firmware Android 4.4.2 KitKat 18.3.C.0.37 FTF file.
1. For Xperia M2 D2303 [Customized SG | Generic/Unbranded]
2. For Xperia M2 D2306 [Customized US | Generic/Unbranded]
Copy the file and paste in Flashtool>Firmwares folder.
Open Flashtool.exe now.
Hit the small lightening button on the top left corner and select Flashmode.
Select the FTF firmware file that you placed in the Firmware folder.
From the right side, select what do you want to wipe. Data, cache and apps log, all wipes are recommended, perhaps you may select if you don’t want.
Click on OK, and it will start preparing the firmware for flashing. This may take a little while to load.
As soon as the firmware is loaded, it will prompt you to attach the phone by turning it off and keeping the back key press.
For Xperia M2, Volume Down key will do the job of back key, just turn off your phone, keep the Volume Down key pressed and plug in the data cable.
As soon as the phone is detected in Flashmode, the firmware will start flashing, Do not leave the Volume Down key until the process is complete.
As soon as you see “Flashing ended or Finished Flashing” leave the Volume Down key, plug the cable out and reboot.
That’s All! Congrats! You’ve installed latest Android 4.4.2 kitkat on your Xperia M2. Enjoy

Update Sony Xperia M2 Dual D2302 To Android 4.4.2 KitKat 18.3.B.0.31 Official Firmware

Sony has started updating its mid range device, the Xperia M2 Dual to Android 4.4.2 KitKat, the new update is based on the build number 18.3.B.0.31. While there’s a number of rumors and news getting us closer to the launch of Sony’s next flagship, the Xperia Z3, Sony is trying its best and showing its users that despite being busy with the next flagship, it still is treating its existing users in a great way by providing them the latest software in time.

Just to have a recap, the Xperia M2 Dual landed in June, 2014. The device sports a 4.8 inches with 229 ppi. The device is powered up with Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 Quad Core CPU clocked at 1.2 GHz accompanied by Adreno 305 GPU and a RAM of 1 GB is there. Initially, the Xperia M2 Dual ran on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and the device just started receiving the KitKat update just now. Xperia M2 Dual’s specifications are a great package in the price Sony is selling it at.

The new update, first of all is based on Google’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat and then are the enhancements. Sony has improved the camera application, battery and performance have been improved and there are bug fixes. Besides this, the new firmware aims at making the device even more stable. The software updates are on a slow roll out and will hit the different regions accordingly as usual.

Since its a little hard for the Android enthusiasts to calm down and wait for the updates patiently, the only way in this situation is to get the update manually instead of relying on the OTA update or through Sony PC companion. In the succeeding post we are going to update Sony Xperia M2 Dual D2302 to Android 4.4.2 KitKat based on the build number 18.3.B.0.31 official firmware using the ftf file and flashing it through Sony Flashtool. Let’s go through the early preparations and then flash this firmware.

Early Preparations:

1. This is only for Sony Xperia M2 Dual D2302/S50h!

This ROM is only for the device mentioned above. Make sure that your model number matches the one listed above. To do so, go to Settings > About Device on your device and see your model number. Flashing this firmware on any other device will result in bricking it so make sure that you meet this requirement first of all.

2. Battery should be charged at least over 60%.

Make sure that your battery is charged enough to complete the flashing process. In case your battery is low and your device goes dead during the flashing process, you may end up soft bricking your device as it won’t complete the flashing process.

3. Backup everything!

Just to be on the safe side, you may consider backing up each and everything from your Android device. This is highly recommended so that in case anything goes wrong, you still have the access to all of your data and you can restore it immediately. You may backup everything as listed below.

Backup SMS Messages
Backup Call Logs
Backup Contacts
Backup Media – Copy your files manually to your PC or Laptop.
Titanium Backup – If already rooted, use Titanium Backup to backup all of your apps, system data and other important content.
Backup Nandroid – If CWM or TWRP installed previously, otherwise skip this step and perform this at the end of flashing.

4. Enable USB Debugging Mode on your device.

Enable USB debugging mode on your device. To do so, tap settings>developer options>USB debugging. If you can’t find developer options in settings, then tap settings > about device and tap “Build Number” for 7 times and you’ll get em’ activated under settings.

5. Install and setup Sony Flashtool.

You must have installed Sony Flashtool. Find the full guide here.After installing Sony Flashtool, open the Flashtool folder from the drive where you installed it.Now open Flashtool>Drivers>Flashtool-drivers.exe and install the Flashtool, Fastboot & Xperia Z2 drivers from the list. [Important]

6. Use OEM data cable to establish connection.

Make sure that you use the phone’s original data cable to establish connection between your phone and the PC. Using a different data cable might result in interrupting the firmware installation.

How To Install Android 4.4.2 KitKat 18.3.B.0.31 Official Firmware On Sony Xperia M2 Dual D2302:

Before moving forward, please make sure that you’ve read the pre requisites and ensure that you are set to go ahead.
Download the latest firmware Android 4.4.2 KitKat 18.3.B.0.31 FTF file.
1. For Xperia M2 Dual D2302/S50h [Customized IN | Generic/Unbranded]
Copy the file and paste in Flashtool>Firmwares folder.
Open Flashtool.exe now.
Hit the small lightening button on the top left corner and select Flashmode.
Select the FTF firmware file that you placed in the Firmware folder.
