It just so happened that on November 3, the day when the iPhone X was officially being sold in the United States and countries around the world, a heist takes places, where the perpetrators made off with 300 iPhone X units, with their market value coming to around $370,000. Judging from the official launch date of the flagship and this incident that took place, it could not have been just plain coincidence that this heist took place.

Thieves make way with $370k worth of iPhone X models; what could be their motivation behind this heist?

In case you’re wondering, thieves swiped hundreds of the overly expensive $999 iPhone from a UPS delivery truck, suggesting that there was a huge reasoning behind this theft. Let us see how these thieves could profit from such a risky maneuver?

Scarcity of iPhone X units means these thieves could sell these smartphones for a huge premium

Though there have been reports that the components being supplied for the iPhone X ranging from the TrueDepth camera and changed logic boards have managed to stabilize, it will take the year 2018 to witness a steady shipment of Apple’s latest and greatest iPhone.

These thieves could take it upon them to sell these models on places like Craigslist and eBay for a hefty profit and looking at how it takes between 3-4 weeks for an iPhone X to reach your doorstep, customers might be interested in their offer of immediate shipment in exchange for a potentially higher priced smartphone. Still, why would customers want to pay a huge sum just for an iPhone?

Apple has always sold millions of its phone models ever since the inception of the first iPhone. 10 years down the road, this is the first iPhone to sport an OLED display, the first iPhone to feature an edge-to-edge glass, the first iPhone to feature wireless and fast-charging support and the first to feature advanced facial recognition.

In short, it is the first iPhone to come with a complete design and feature overhaul, and after looking at years’ of Apple’s smartphone lineup get the same mundane design treatment, customers were refreshed to finally see something that is gorgeous and brings a lot of new things to the table.

Even before the heist took place, there were a lot of eBay sellers that decided to cash in on the opportunity to sell their iPhone X units to customers at a much larger price tag and those people with deep pockets won’t mind shelling a few extra hundred dollar bills if it grants them ownership of the latest and greatest iPhone.
