Last year, Razer introduced the world’s very first gaming smartphone. Razer tried to set the smartphone industry on a new path back then. The Razer phone came out with top-notch specifications. The company had several features aiming at making gaming easy on the smartphones. The Razer phone had a 5.7-inch QHD IGZO 120 Hz LCD display. It had a 4,000 mAh battery under the hood supporting Quick Charge 4+. Razer phone ran on Android Nougat initially, and it was updated to Android Oreo in early 2018. Following Razer’s footsteps, Asus also released a gaming smartphone. Asus’ ROG Phone impressed masses. It looks like Razer now wants to start a competition. The company has already started working on the Razer Phone 2.
Razer’s VP Chen Xiaoping, speaking at China Joy 2018 in Shanghai, mentioned that the new Razer Phone should be out in December. The phone will make its way to China. Chen Xiaoping mentioned that the phone will run on the latest chipset. He didn’t mention which chipset. It is important to note here that Qualcomm introduces its new chipsets to the world in early December as well. Some Chinese media outlets have suggested that Razer Phone 2 will be the first phone to run on latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 CPU as it will be out by then as well.
The Razer phone had a price tag of $600. On the other hand, Asus’s gaming phone, the ROG phone came with a price tag of around $1,100. The Asus ROG Phone has set the bar high for gaming smartphones now. It would be really interesting to see what innovation Razer comes up with to beat the Asus ROG Phone now.
When the Razer Phone was released, it wasn’t quite clear where the gaming smartphone industry will head next. However, it is clear now that gaming smartphones are real and they are here to stay. A new smartphone segment will be born if manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei, and LG also join to form a bandwagon of gaming phones.
