Update Xperia Z2 D6503 to Android Lollipop 23.1.A.1.28 Firmware

Xperia Z2 D6503 is receiving a new Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update. Sony is focusing on improving the Lollipop firmware for its mainstream devices, keeping the missing features and bugs in view, Sony has started rolling out this new update. The update carries the build number 23.1.A.1.28. The only change we can spot in this update is the addition of missing “Clear All” button and its right placement in the recent apps panel. The update has hit Nordic region and will be hitting other regions pretty soon. If you are anxious to update your device to this latest build right away, you may want to use some manual method. In the succeeding guide we will flash the new Android 5.0.2 Lollipop with the build number 23.1.A.1.28 on our beloved Sony Xperia Z2 D6503 using Sony Flashtool.

The firmware is official and flashing it involves no risks at all. To make sure that no mishap occurs, please follow this guide to the letter. Let’s go through some precautions and pre-requisites and then flash this latest firmware.

 

Early Preparations:

1. This is only for Sony Xperia Z2 D6503

This ROM is only for the device mentioned above. Make sure that your model number matches the one listed above. To do so, go to Settings > About Device on your device and see your model number. Flashing this firmware on any other device will result in bricking it so make sure that you meet this requirement first of all.

2. Battery should be charged at least over 60%.

Make sure that your battery is charged enough to complete the flashing process. In case your battery is low and your device goes dead during the flashing process, you may end up soft bricking your device as it won’t complete the flashing process.

3. Backup everything!

Just to be on the safe side, you may consider backing up each and everything from your Android device. This is highly recommended so that in case anything goes wrong, you still have the access to all of your data and you can restore it immediately. You may backup everything as listed below.

4. Enable USB Debugging Mode on your device.

Enable USB debugging mode on your device. To do so, tap settings>developer options>USB debugging. If you can’t find developer options in settings, then tap settings > about device and tap “Build Number” for 7 times and you’ll get em’ activated under settings.

5. Install and setup Sony Flashtool.

You must have installed Sony Flashtool. Find the full guide here.

After installing Sony Flashtool, open the Flashtool folder from the drive where you installed it. Now open Flashtool>Drivers>Flashtool-drivers.exe and install the Flashtool, Fastboot & Xperia Z2 D6503 drivers from the list. [Important]

6. Use OEM data cable to establish connection.

Make sure that you use the phone’s original data cable to establish connection between your phone and the PC. Using a different data cable might result in interrupting the firmware installation.

Steps to Install  23.1.A.1.28 FTF on Xperia Z2 D6503

Before moving forward, please make sure that you’ve read the pre requisites and ensure that you are set to go ahead.

  1. Download the latest firmware Android 5.0.2 Lollipop  23.1.A.1.28 FTF file.
    1. D6503 23.1.A.1.28 FTF Download [Non Branded / Generic FTF]
  2. Copy the file and paste in Flashtool>Firmwares folder.
  3. Open Flashtool.exe now.
  4. Hit the small lightening button on the top left corner and select Flashmode.
  5. Select the FTF firmware file that you placed in the Firmware folder.
  6. From the right side, select what do you want to wipe. Data, cache and apps log, all wipes are recommended, perhaps you may select if you don’t want.
  7. Click on OK, and it will start preparing the firmware for flashing. This may take a little while to load.
  8. As soon as the firmware is loaded, it will prompt you to attach the phone by turning it off and keeping the back key press.
  9. For Xperia Z2 Volume Down key will do the job of back key, just turn off your phone, keep the Volume Down key pressed and plug in the data cable.
  10. As soon as the phone is detected in Flashmode, the firmware will start flashing, Do not leave the Volume Down key until the process is complete.
  11. As soon as you see “Flashing ended or Finished Flashing” leave the Volume Down key, plug the cable out and reboot.
  12. That’s All! Congrats! You’ve installed latest Android 5.0.2 Lollipop on your Xperia Z2. Enjoy!

Steps For Rooting Xperia Z2 D6503 23.1.A.0.740 Firmware

1. Downgrade to .167 Firmware and Root It

  1. If you have already updated your smartphone to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, then you have to downgrade your device to KitKat OS and Root it.
  2. Use this guide to Install .167 firmware.
  3. Root using this guide.
  4. Now Install XZ Dual Recovery.
  5. Now phone is rooted, USB Debugging must be enabled.
  6. Download latest installer for Xperia Z2 from here. (Z2-lockeddualrecovery2.8.10-RELEASE.installer.zip)
  7. Connect phone to PC using OEM date cable and run install.bat.
  8. It will install the custom recovery.
  9. Now work here is done. Lets move on to next step.

2. Make A Pre-Rooted Flashable Firmware For .740 FTF

  1. Download PRF Creator and install on your system.
  2. Download SuperSU zip and place anywhere on PC.
  3. Download .740 FTF and place it anywhere on PC.
  4. Download Z2-lockeddualrecovery2.8.10-RELEASE.flashable.zip
  5. Now run PRFC and add all three required files in it.
  6. Then click on Create.
  7. Once the Flashable ROM is created, it will show the successful message.
  8. Do not touch any other option while creating the pre-rooted firmware.
  9. Now copy the pre-rooted firmware to the phone’s internal storage.
  10. Our work in this step is now done. Move on to next step.

 

3. Root and Install Recovery on Z2 D6503 5.0.2 Lollipop Firmware

  1. Custom recovery was installed in the first step.
  2. The pre-rooted firmware was created and copied to phone in next step.
  3. Now you have to turn off phone.
  4. Turn it on again and press volume up or down repeatedly to enter custom recovery.
  5. Click on install and locate the folder where you placed the flashable zip earlier.
  6. Tap on it and install it.
  7. Now reboot the phone.
  8. If phone is still connected to PC via USB cable, disconnect it.
  9. Now go back to the .740 ftf you downloaded in second step and copy it to /flashtool/fimrwares
  10. Open flashtool and click on lightning icon in the top left.
  11. Click on it and click on flashmode.
  12. Select the .740 firmware.
  13. In the right bar, in the exclude options, exclude System only while flashing. Leave every other options as it is.
  14. While flashtool prepares the software for flashing, turn off your phone.
  15. Keep the volume down button pressed and connect it to PC via USB cable.
  16. The button must be pressed during it.
  17. The phone will enter flashmode.
  18. Flashtool will automatically detect it and start flashing.
  19. After flashing phone will reboot and you will be done 🙂

In this guide, you can download and install the 23.1.A.0.740 FTF on D5803. This is the official firmware for Xperia Z3C with all the latest features and fixes. Sony has released the 23.1.A.0.740 firmware for Xperia Z2 D6503. It is the latest firmware release for Xperia Z2 based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. People know that there have been other Lollipop releases for Xperia Z2 as well but this one is the latest. Sony has released 23.1.A.0.740 firmware for Xperia Z2 which contains several bugs found in the initial Lollipop firmware. Moreover, the .740 Lollipop update is even more stable and battery friendly than previous firmware. The older firmware had some bugs like the phone heated up sometimes and the phone would drain battery pretty fast. All of these issues are apparently resolved by Sony in 23.1.A.0.740 update for D6503. Those who faced these problems in .726 firmware for Xperia Z2, must update their devices.

Enable USB debugging mode on your device. To do so, tap settings>developer options>USB debugging. If you can’t find developer options in settings, then tap settings > about device and tap “Build Number” for 7 times and you’ll get em’ activated under settings.

5. Install and setup Sony Flashtool.

You must have installed Sony Flashtool. Find the full guide here.

After installing Sony Flashtool, open the Flashtool folder from the drive where you installed it. Now open Flashtool>Drivers>Flashtool-drivers.exe and install the Flashtool, Fastboot & Xperia Z2 drivers from the list. [Important]

6. Use OEM data cable to establish connection.

Make sure that you use the phone’s original data cable to establish connection between your phone and the PC. Using a different data cable might result in interrupting the firmware installation.

Steps to Install 23.1.A.0.740 FTF on Xperia Z2 D6503

Before moving forward, please make sure that you’ve read the pre requisites and ensure that you are set to go ahead.

  1. Download the latest firmware Android 5.0.2 Lollipop 23.1.A.0.740 FTF file.

  2. Copy the file and paste in Flashtool>Firmwares folder.
  3. Open Flashtool.exe now.
  4. Hit the small lightening button on the top left corner and select Flashmode.
  5. Select the FTF firmware file that you placed in the Firmware folder.
  6. From the right side, select what do you want to wipe. Data, cache and apps log, all wipes are recommended, perhaps you may select if you don’t want.
  7. Click on OK, and it will start preparing the firmware for flashing. This may take a little while to load.
  8. As soon as the firmware is loaded, it will prompt you to attach the phone by turning it off and keeping the back key press.
  9. For Z2 Volume Down key will do the job of back key, just turn off your phone, keep the Volume Down key pressed and plug in the data cable.
  10. As soon as the phone is detected in Flashmode, the firmware will start flashing, Do not leave the Volume Down key until the process is complete.
  11. As soon as you see “Flashing ended or Finished Flashing” leave the Volume Down key, plug the cable out and reboot.
  12. That’s All! Congrats! You’ve installed latest Android 5.0.2 Lollipop on your Xperia Z2. Enjoy.

Galaxy Tab S 10.5 one of the lucky Sammy devices that received Android 5.0.2 Lollipop in the very early stages. The update made Galaxy Tab S 10.5 owners pretty happy as it gave them a whole new UI along with a lot of goodies. Samsung has managed to keep the Galaxy Tab S series at the top-of-the-line by updating it to the latest and greatest Android version. Android power users who have updated or who are going to update their device to Android Lollipop, they may want to root it in order to customise the device. Previous methods which helped users to root the device running KitKat may not work with Lollipop. You need a different method now. Before you start looking out for the method, we’ve found it already in order to save some time of yours. In the succeeding guide we will be installing TWRP Recovery 2.8.6.2 and we will also gain root access on our beloved Galaxy Tab S 10.5 on Lollipop.SMT800-White

If you have no idea about TWRP recovery and root access so far, let’s learn about both these things first. TWRP recovery is one of the famous custom recoveries out of the only two available for Android. TWRP will allow you to flash .zip files on your device. Basically it allows the users to load custom stuff on device which includes MODs, tweaks and most importantly custom ROMs. TWRP will also allow you to create and restore Nandroid Backup. You will be able to wipe system, data, cache and dalvik cache and a lot more using advanced options. Root access will allow you to install root specific applications and enhance your device performance, battery life and add new features to the software as well.

Let’s go ahead now and start with the process now. We will go through some quick early preparations and pre-cautions to make the method safe and secure.

  1. Put your Galaxy Tab S 10.5 in download mode. To do so, turn it off completely. Now turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Down + Home + Power Key. Once it boots up and shows warning, press Volume Up to continue.
  2. Now open Odin3 v3.10.6.exe file on your PC.
  3. Click on “AP” tab in Odin and select the TWRP.tar file that you downloaded above.
  4. Let Odin load the file and connect your phone to your PC in the meanwhile.

  6. As soon as Odin has detected your phone in download mode, the “ID:COM” box on the top-right corner will turn blue.
  7. Now click on the Start button. Odin will start flashing the twrp file.
  8. As soon as the flashing ends, your phone will reboot.
  9. Now reboot your phone into the TWRP Recovery mode.
  10. In TWRP Recovery, tap Install > Install Zip > Locate Zip at the bottom of the list > Swipe finger to flash. This will flash SuperSu in your tab. Once done, reboot into system.
  11. Once your tab has booted up, check out the SuperSu application in the app drawer. If it asks you to update SU binary, update it.
  12.  Also install BusyBox from Play Store.
  13. Verify root access using Root Checker.
  14. That’s all. You’re now set to unleash the open source nature of Android.

If you own this device and you haven’t already received the new update through OTA or through Samsung Kies, you may want to update your device manually. If you’re looking for such method, you’ve already spotted the right place. In the following post we are going to update all variants of the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop official firmware. This guide will work for both, WiFi only and LTE variants of this device. Early Preparations & Precautions

  • While using Odin3, turn off Samsung Kies if you’ve installed it. Also turn off your Firewall or any Antivirus software if enabled.

  • This is official firmware and it won’t void the warranty of your phone. It will not cause any damage to your phone either.

  2. Open Odin3 V3.10.6.exe on your PC. MAC users will use JOdin.
  3. Connect your phone to your PC or MAC in download mode now. To do so, turn off your phone completely first. Now turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Down + Home + Power Key. Once your phone turns on and shows you warning, press Volume Up to continue. You are in download mode now. Plug in the data-cable now. As soon as Odin3 detects your phone, the ID:COM bar in the top-right corner should turn blue or yellow depending upon your version of Odin.
  4. Load the downloaded and extracted firmware file, which should be in .tar format. To do so, click the “AP” tab and locate the extracted .tar firmware file. If you’re using an older version of Odin, you will use “PDA” tab to load the firmware file. Once you’ve selected the file, it will take a while for Odin to load it. Wait patiently at this point.
