Back in 2014, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note Edge. It was the very first smartphone of the world to come with a curved display. The Galaxy Note Edge was more of an experimental device. Surprisingly, the Note Edge did quite well. The only downside of the phone was its curved display which was prone to cracks. Drop your Note Edge once and forget its display. This raised the need for better protection atop of the screens.

Self-Regenerating Oleophobic Coating

In 2015, Samsung released the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. These phones had the Gorilla Glass on the front and at the back. Samsung added a layer of the standard oleophobic coating on the front and at the back. It looks like Samsung further wants to improve the protection. Therefore, Samsung, according to WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), patented the self-regenerating oleophobic coating.

Oleophobic coating is a material that is applied to a phone’s glass in order to keep it from the oily material, fingerprints, and scratches. The idea of applying a coating to a phone’s display emerged from the iPhone 3GS. Apple was the first manufacturer to use such a solution on its smartphones. Things have been getting better since then. Nowadays, the phone manufacturers are using a standard oleophobic coating to add a layer of protection to their phones.
