For those complaining about the smaller batteries in current generation iPhone models, Apple might grow a heart after all. Or maybe, the company will be forced to use bigger batteries because the next generation of iPhone models will feature components that will need a lot of juice to operate.
According to popular KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi Kuo, Apple will be designing a system that will allow future iPhones to get a bigger battery. Since more of these models will adopt the use of TrueDepth cameras for optimal camera performance, they will be eating more battery life. If Apple is unable to comply with this requirement, then we might be seeing better battery performing from future phones.
“Apple capable of designing new system for large-capacity batteries: We believe the adoption of TrueDepth camera for 3D sensing in 2017-18 will create demand for larger-capacity batteries. From 2019, we predict iPhone may adopt upgraded 3D-sensing and AR-related functions, and it will consume more power, further increasing demand for large-capacity batteries. We believe Apple’s key technologies, including semiconductor manufacturing processes, system-in-package (SIP), and substrate-like PCB (SLP), will create the required space for larger batteries.”
After Apple introduced an official statement saying that it purposely reduces the iPhone’s performance to give the user better battery life, the company might have put a crosshair on its own head since users are not going to be comfortable with the idea that they are spending so much money and all it takes is a software update to ruin their iPhone’s performance.
The new batteries will not be based on a new form of technology. Apple will continue to lithium ion cells, but because there will be more space inside future smartphones thanks to a better printed circuit board design, we will be able to see higher battery capacities in future devices.
All 2018 smartphone models have been rumored to get TrueDepth cameras so we might be seeing the new design on such phones much sooner. The main question that we figure is Apple going to be charging a premium for this too?
