Why Samsung Galaxy S8 does not have an ‘in-display’ fingerprint scanner?

When rumors related to Galaxy S8 started swirling, one of the speculated features was an ‘in-display’ finger print scanner. Samsung had invested in touch sensor partner Synaptics and people were expecting the company to push this innovation partner. Back in January, it was confirmed that Galaxy S8 will not have embedded ‘in-display’ fingerprint scanner but will be found at the rear of the device. In the different leaks seen till yet the finger print scanner will be found at the rear of the device along side the camera setup.

Synaptics tried its level best but the required technology could not be prepared in time for the Galaxy S8. So, Samsung had to make the decision to place the fingerprint scanner at the rear of the device.

Samsung poured resources into Synaptics’ fledgling technology last year but the results were frustrating. With the production imminent, the company had to decide to relocate the fingerprint scanning home button to the back of the device at the last minute.

This definitely is a setback for the company as they were planning to use it and push sales. Now Samsung will have to go for iris scanner and maybe the rumored facial recognition technology. One of the major problems is that Sammy’s competitor, Apple is planning to use this on screen fingerprint scanning technology for iPhone 8. One of the major issues with this is that once Apple introduces it then it wouldn’t be something novel and unique. Apple is hard at work testing this technology and according to rumors they have hot on something substantial.

Later this year Samsung will be introducing Galaxy Note 8, there is a high probability that the phablet may very well come with all the features missing in Galaxy S8, provided it does not crash and burn.
