Twitter finally increases its character limit from 140 to 280

The thing that made Twitter extremely unique and allowed yourself to express your feelings in the smallest and quickest manner possible is going to be given its biggest update to date; increasing the total character limit. The micro-blogging social network has announced today that it has introduced a small public test that will allow users to go beyond the 140-character limit and express themselves as high as 280 characters.

Though you can send direct messages with a bigger length, Twitter never allowed public tweets to go beyond the 140 character barrier. Things have taken a different turn thanks to the latest blog post published by the social network. In this post, Twitter mentions that around 9 percent of its English users reach that character limit for tweets. There was also a statistic that revealed users had to go back, edit their current tweet so that it would be able to fit in this 140-character limit.

We do not know about you guys but that would sound extremely time-consuming and frustrating for us. As for those whose native language isn’t English, but Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, you would need to draw up more characters, meaning more often than not you will never be able to convey the message, so a huge change had to be in order.

Twitter does state that its fundamental goal is to allow users to express themselves quickly and to the point. While the company has acknowledged that it will start to roll out changes very soon, there was not an exact date provided, meaning this new implementation could actually take weeks to happen.

Still, the desire to being able to express yourself freely without going back to edit your tweet is something that we’ve longed to see. We’ve known to cross that 140-character barrier ourselves several times.

Do you feel that Twitter has finally done the right this time around? Do let us know.
