Synaptics announces its first ever in-display fingerprint sensor and will launch with a leading smartphone maker

Very soon, we might be looking at the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ featuring the world’s first in-display fingerprint sensor thanks to the efforts of Synaptics. Details of the press release, if you’re interested in them have been given below. Come to think of it, you might be very interested in what the company has to say.

“The leading developer of human interface solutions, today announced mass production with a top five OEM of its new Clear ID FS9500 family of optical in-display fingerprint sensors. Designed for smartphones with infinity displays, Synaptics’ Clear ID in-display fingerprint sensors magically activate in the display only when needed. Clear ID is faster than alternative biometrics such as 3D facial, highly-secure with SentryPoint™ technology, and very convenient with one-touch/one-step biometric authentication directly in the touchscreen display area of smartphones.

The new Synaptics Clear ID optical fingerprint sensors deliver one-touch high-resolution scanning through full cover glass and enable sleek, button-free, bezel-free infinity displays. Synaptics’ highperformance Clear ID FS9500 optical solution excels with wet, dry and cold fingers, and since it’s protected by glass, is durable, scratchproof and waterproof. In-display fingerprint technology allows users to securely unlock the device in situations including while it’s sitting on the table, at any angle, or while in a car mount. Synaptics’ Clear ID performance is twice as fast as 3D facial recognition and requires only one touch to access your smartphone.”

The Clear ID FS9500 family might be the first of many solutions to be present in future smartphones, but Synaptics has also revealed that it plans to give this component to a leading smartphone manufacturer. In our minds, we can think of no other phone manufacturer other than Samsung at this point, although we have a feeling that more and more companies will start to adopt these solutions really fast.

Huawei might be the next company to come with a flagship that will sport an in-display fingerprint sensor at the front. In this way, manufacturers will be able to maintain those slim bezels and also have the option whether to place the fingerprint reader at the back or at the front.
