Update – 9/4/2018: OnePlus 6T Retail Box Leaked

OnePlus 6T’s retail box has made it to the internet today. The phone’s retail box doesn’t reveal its specifications, however, the lid placed inside the box spills the beans about the phone’s design and display. OnePlus 6T will supposedly have a waterdrop notch housing the front camera. The phone is also coming with the in-display fingerprint scanner.

OnePlus 6T was rumored to follow the design language of Oppo R17. For past few years, the Oppo phones have been laying the base for OnePlus handsets. If the retail box leak takes a reality, the OnePlus 6T will turn out to be an offshoot of Oppo R17 for real.

OnePlus “T” Series Flashback

Back in 2014, the OnePlus came into the smartphone scene as a startup. Their very first smartphone, the OnePlus One was a phone with flagship specifications with a price tag of only $299. The price point was where the OnePlus One made a mark. At that time, the flagships of other phone makers were going for $600+. At just half price, the users got a powerful device giving all other phone manufacturers a run for the money.

After the OnePlus One, the company released the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus X. The OnePlus 2 was a successful phone, the OnePlus X couldn’t do that well. In 2016, OnePlus released the OnePlus 3. This phone was powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 CPU. In the same year, Snapdragon 821 SoC was made available. OnePlus didn’t want to be left out. It released another phone which was powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821. This new phone was named as OnePlus 3T. This is how the T series came into being.

OnePlus did not release any OnePlus 4. The company released OnePlus 5 in 2017. At the same time, the trend of all-screen phones having 18:9 display ratio and the infamous notch reached its peak. OnePlus released the OnePlus 5T to tackle the big-display competition. OnePlus 5T was released with a display having 19:9 ratio and a notch at the top. It was not the only display where this phone was improved, the OnePlus 5T got mighty upgrades in the camera department too. The face unlock feature also got better in the OP5T.

Will there be a OnePlus 6T?

So, every time the company released a T variant, it had something new to put on its phones. That’s exactly what OnePlus is looking for this time as well. OnePlus has been looking for a reason to build the OnePlus 6T, at least that is what it seems from what OnePlus India’s General Manager told Tech2 at an event which took place in Mumbai.

According to Tech2, Vikas Agarwal said that the company would release a OnePlus 6T if the industry had something new to offer.

This is what exactly I was talking about above. This time around, phone makers are moving towards a better notch that doesn’t look ugly. A display with minimum elements on the front is becoming a hot choice for the users. Triple camera system at the back and dual camera system on the front is what’s becoming a standard. If all these features are something that the OnePlus considers “new”, there will definitely be a OnePlus 6T.

Solid OnePlus 6T Existence Evidence: The EEC Visit

We talked about the reasons that could push the company to manufacture the OnePlus 6T. It looks like the company is actually busy working on the phone. A mysterious OnePlus phone visited the EEC yesterday. The EEC ((Eurasian Economic Commission) certification shows a device going by the model number A6013.

The OnePlus carries the model number A6000. The model number A6013 is good enough to show that this is another variant of the OnePlus 6. Let’s just hope that it’s the upgraded variant of the OnePlus 6 and it turns out to be the OnePlus 6T.

The certification shows nothing else at all. No information about phone’s hardware and software popped up through this certification.

T-Mobile Exclusive OnePlus 6T coming to the US

According to Cnet, the OnePlus and T-Mobile have reached a deal to release the next flagship OnePlus 6T in the US. The company will release the OnePlus 6T the OnePlus 6T exclusively under the umbrella of T-Mobile in the month of October. The company will also sell its global variant that will be compatible with the carriers like At&t and Verizon. The price of the OnePlus 6T is expected to be around $550 in the US.

OnePlus 6T Design

The OnePlus phones usually borrow the design from the Oppo phones. Oppo, Vivo, and the OnePlus are owned by the same company known as “BKK Electronics”. It makes clear sense for OnePlus to follow the design language of an Oppo phone.

Last year, the OnePlus 5T followed the design language of the Oppo R11S. The OnePlus 6 followed the design language of the Oppo R15. This year, Oppo has released the Oppo R17 and rumor has it that the OnePlus 6 will look like this phone. The R17 phones come with a whole new design. There is a waterdrop notch on the front holding the front camera. R17 comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner. The R17 and R17 Pro come with VOOC and SuperVOOC fast charging feature as well. R17 Pro even houses a triple camera system at the back.

If the trend is to be followed this year as well, the OnePlus 6T will make a groundbreaking entry into the smartphone world. That’s not because it will simply follow the R17’s design language. That’s because the OnePlus 6T, with that design, will be a flagship-grade device. It will have the hardware features that the Oppo phones lack. The OnePlus OxygenOS is also something that users have fallen in love with. So, it would be really interesting to see such a phone from the OnePlus.

OnePlus 6T Concepts

A number of YouTubers have already designed the concepts of the OnePlus 6T. Some of the concepts show the device with a waterdrop notch, a dual camera system and a fingerprint scanner at the back. Some concepts have shown the device with a dual camera system at the back and a regular notch. While some of the concepts show the device with an all-screen front hiding the pop-up front cameras.

Here are all the OnePlus 6T concepts that have surfaced so far.

OnePlus 6T New Features

According to the speculations and rumors, these are the new features that the OnePlus 6 may or may not have.

Snapdragon 855

Qualcomm usually releases its new SoC at the start of December every year. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 will be released in December this year. Rumor has it that the OnePlus 6T will run on Snapdragon 855. If the OnePlus 6T is going to be released in November, then it will definitely have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and not the 855.

However, if the company plans on launching the phone in late December or early January 2019, it might run on the Snapdragon 855 CPU.

IP Certification to make it Waterproof

Typically, The OnePlus phones are not waterproof. The OnePlus 6 was tested and it did have some sort of waterproofing capability, but this capability was never mentioned by the company. The OnePlus 6’s waterproofing ability was revealed in its teardown test.

OnePlus fans are expecting the company to make the next device waterproof. IP68 is what the companies like Samsung are using to make their phones water and dust resistant. It would be really nice to see OnePlus 6T coming with the IP68 rating.

Wireless charging

The very feature that all the OnePlus phones lacked, is expected on the OnePlus 6T. OnePlus might opt for a glass back on the OnePlus 6T making a way for the phone to support wireless charging. There isn’t any word about this feature making its way to the OnePlus 6T, however, again, it would be nice to see it there.

Enhanced dash charging

OnePlus currently uses its dash charging feature to enable fast charging on its existing phones. The OnePlus 6T is expected to have an enhanced dash charging feature. According to the rumors, the OnePlus will benefit from the VOOC and SuperVOOC fast charging feature on the Oppo R17 and R17 Pro.

Triple Camera System, Waterdrop Notch, Dual Front Cameras

Huawei first released a phone with a triple camera system. The company has set the bar high for all other phone makers. To stand the competition OnePlus needs to come up with a better camera. A triple camera is expected on the OnePlus 6T. A dual front camera is also becoming a standard now, so the OnePlus 6T may sport it on the front. The Oppo R17’s existence has given us an idea about the waterdrop notch on the OnePlus 6T.

512GB Variant

OnePlus releases a 64GB, 128GB and a 256GB storage variant of its flagship devices. At least that is what we saw on the OnePlus 5, 5T and the OnePlus 6. Samsung has made 128GB the basic storage memory on its Galaxy Note 9. If 128GB internal storage becomes a new standard, the OnePlus 6T might launch with the same storage in the basic variant. If that is going to be the case, there will be a 512GB storage variant as well. I am rooting for the OnePlus 6T to come with 128/256/512GB internal storage.

In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

The presence of a fingerprint scanner on the OnePlus 6T is far-fetched. However, you know never know what the company might end up with. We have seen a fingerprint scanner on the phones like Vivo Nex and Oppo R17. Since both these phones are from the sister companies of OnePlus, it won’t surprise us if the fingerprint scanner makes it to the OnePlus 6T.

OnePlus 6T Price and Release Date

The report published by Cnet clearly gives an idea about the price and release date of the OnePlus 6T. The OnePlus 6T is expected to debut with a price tag of $550. The device will make its way to the US in October. The previous trend shows that the phone will come out in November. It would be completely fine to say that the OnePlus 6T will come out of the curtains between November-October 2018.

OnePlus 6T expected specifications in a nutshell

  1. 6.4-inch Optic AMOLED Display with 1080 x 2280 resolution and 19:9 display ratio.
  2. Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
  3. Waterdrop Notch.
  4. Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 or 855.
  5. Adreno 630 or higher.
  6. 6GB/8GB RAM
  7. 128/256/512GB Storage
  8. Triple Rear Camera System: 16MP + 20MP + 8MP
  9. Front camera: 20MP
  10. 3300 mAh battery
  11. Android 9 Pie

Conclusion

In a matter of 2 months, the OnePlus 6T will be here. OnePlus hasn’t disappointed its fans for the last 2 years. Expectations from the Chinese phone maker are high this time. Especially the fact that the OnePlus is now launching in the US makes this phone a lot more important. We are keeping our eyes on everything about the OnePlus 6T. I will update this post as soon as I find new information on this device. In the meanwhile, stay connected with us.
