Nokia working on developing an AI Assistant

Nokia has been in the news for the last few days courtesy of their upcoming smartphones. First the Nokia 6 was announced and then Nokia E1s specs and features were leaked. HMD Global has licensed to make use of the Nokia brand name for its smartphones. The new update out suggests that Nokia is also working on developing a Virtual Assistant. This development is not led by HMD Global, but rather the Finnish networking company.

Virtual AI assistants seem to in rage these days, as Samsung is also working on bringing one to its devices. Nokia has filed a trademark for naming their AI Viki which they describe as a chat and voice based assistant for the smartphones and the web. At the moment the company is tight lipped over their plan for their AI as to what direction they will be taking and when can we see it in any of the devices.

Nokia jumping the virtual assistant bandwagon attests to the fact that they are going to become an integral part of not only smartphones but home appliances as well. This aspect has been evidenced by the dominance of Amazon’s Alexa in home appliances at the CES 2017. At this point we are skeptical as to whether Viki will end up in the Nokia devices, we shouldn’t keep fingers crossed for that as HMD Global and Nokia are not working in collaboration for the development of the smartphones. Possibilities are that Viki may end up being a part of another smartphone. The developments in the coming months will clarify as to which brand will end up using Viki.
