iPhone 9 could get LCD, metal and glass body when it arrives in 2018

Apple is not yet done with LCD-based iPhone models as the iPhone 9 could tout this technology for a cheaper price tag. According to a new report, an iPhone with a 6.1-inch display could be released in 2018, bearing a similar design language to the iPhone X.

“Apple is likely to release another new iPhone with a liquid crystal display next year, according to a source privy to the company’s product designs. The source also said Apple is tentatively planning two new handsets equipped with organic light-emitting diode displays.”

If this report holds true, the new models will come as welcome news to suppliers across Asia, especially Sharp and Japan Display. Sharp and Japan Display are suppliers of LCD panels and it would come as a huge blow to them if Apple were to suspend its partnership with them.

“The 6.1-inch LCD model will probably sport a metal back [like older iPhones] available in several colors.”

A 6.1-inch LCD panel means that the iPhone 9 could feature an edge-to-edge glass design like the iPhone X. However, thanks to its increased screen, the iPhone 9 could feature a larger battery capacity. An increased smartphone size with automatically result in a larger battery, as what we have seen in the past.

The iPhone 9 could also feature similar hardware to the models that will be featuring an OLED panel. However, it might lose its efficiency because it will be using an LCD display instead of an OLED one. The base price of the handset could start from $649, giving buyers the opportunity to spend less money on a phone that features an attractive design from the outside.

It will also come with Face ID but looking at the ways in which the security implementation can be abused, Apple will have to introduce several improvements along the way to further enhance it.
