How to install TWRP Recovery and Root Xiaomi Mi6

Xiaomi Mi6 is the new player from the Chinese giant. The Mi6 is quite a device to get your hands on. It carries a 5.15 inch Full HD display with an 8 MP shooter on the front. Xiaomi Mi6 is powered up with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 CPU with a RAM of 6 GB. It is accompanied by an Adreno 540 GPU. Mi6 is available in two storage options i.e. 64 GB and 128 GB. You will find a 12 MP shooter on the back of this smartphone. Xiaomi Mi6 runs on Android 7.1 Nougat with MIUI 8.0 on the top. This phone has a USB Type-C connector. A 3350 mAh battery is fixed inside the phone.

Precautions & Preparation

  • This guide is intended for Xiaomi Mi6 only. Do not try this method on any other device otherwise, you may result in bricking it.
  • Make sure that your phone’s battery is charged up to 80% in order to avoid any power issues during the flashing process.
  • Backup all of your important contacts, call logs, SMS messages and media content to stay on a safe end.
  • Enable USB debugging mode on your phone in developer options. To do so, go to settings > about device > tap build number for 7 times. You will have developer options in settings now. Open developer options > Enable USB debugging. If you have the OEM Unlocking option, enable it as well.
  • Use your original data cable to establish a connection between your phone and your PC.
  • Follow this guide to the letter to avoid any mishap.

Required downloads & installations

  1. Download and install Xiaomi USB drivers.
  2. Download and install Minimal ADB & Fastboot drivers.
  3. Download SuperSu.zip file and copy it to your phone’s external storage or the internal storage.

How To Install TWRP Recovery and Root Xiaomi Mi6

  1. Download recovery.img file for Xiaomi Mi6. Rename the downloaded file to only “recovery.img” to make the process easy.
  2. Copy recovery.img file to Minimal ADB & Fastboot folder which is located in program files in your windows installation drive.
  3. Connect your Xiaomi Mi6 to your PC now.
  4. Open Minimal ADB & Fastboot.exe from the Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder.
  5. Now in the command window enter following commands:
    • fastboot reboot-bootloader

      This will reboot your phone in the bootloader/fastboot mode.

    • fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

      This will flash the recovery on your phone.

    • fastboot reboot recovery or use the Volume Up + Down + Power combination to get into TWRP now.

    • (this will boot your device in TWRP recovery mode)

How to Root Xiaomi Mi6

  1. Download SuperSU.zip and copy it to your Mi6’s internal storage.
  2. Boot into TWRP recovery on your Mi6 using the volume and power button combination.
  3. Now in the main screen of TWRP, tap “Install > Locate the newly copied SuperSU.zip file and flash it”.
  4. After flashing SuperSU, reboot your phone. You are all done.
  5. Now after your phone boots up, install SuperSU to handle the root permissions on your phone.
  6. Your device will boot up now. Find SuperSu in the app drawer. Install Root Checker app to verify root access.
