Install TWRP Custom Recovery and Root Xiaomi Redmi 5A

Xiaomi Redmi 5A was released very recently. This is a low-end smartphone from the Chinese giant. The Redmi 5A comes in with a screen of 5.0-inch. It has 720 x 1280 pixels resolution and 206 PPI. The Redmi 5A is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 and Adreno 306 GPU. It has a 3GB RAM or 32GB storage variant or a 2GB RAM and 16GB storage variant. The phone is equipped with a 13MP shooter at its back and a 5MP shooter on the front. There’s a 3000 mAh battery under the hood. The Redmi 5A runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box. The phone is easily available under a price tag of EUR 110 or USD 130.

The phone came out in December 2017, to be exact. It took only a few days for a good developer to break the boundaries on this phone. The Redmi 5A has got the TWRP recovery support now. Redmi 5A owners can install the TWRP custom recovery in order to start customizing their brand new smartphone. Xiaomi Redmi 5A users can root their phone right after installing the TWRP recovery. Once the recovery is installed on your phone, it can be used to perform several custom operations. These operations include flashing a custom ROM, installing SuperSU or Magisk to root the phone, flashing .img and .zip files and a lot more. Install TWRP Custom Recovery and Root Xiaomi Redmi 5A

Requirements

  1. This guide is only for the Xiaomi Redmi 5A. Do not try this on any other phone.
  2. Charge your phone good enough so that it doesn’t go dead during the installation process.
  3. Backup your call logs, contacts and SMS messages. Also backup your media content. This is important since unlocking the bootloader will completely wipe your phone.
  4. Enable OEM Unlocking and USB Debugging mode on your Redmi 5A.
  5. Use the OEM data cable to connect your phone to your PC.
  6. Unlock your Xiaomi Redmi 5A’s bootloader using this guide.
  7. Follow this guide carefully.

Required downloads and installations

  1. Download and install Minimal ADB and Fastboot drivers on your computer.
  2. Download and install Xiaomi USB drivers on your computer.
  3. Download TWRP Recovery file. Rename this file to recovery.img and copy it to C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder.
  4. Download SuperSU.zip or Magisk file and copy it to your phone’s internal or external storage.
  5. Download lazyflasher-no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip and copy it to your phone’s internal or external storage as well.

Install TWRP on Xiaomi Redmi 5A

  1. Connect your Xiaomi Redmi 5A to your computer now.
  2. Go to the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot and then launch the MAF32.exe file.
  3. Now in the command window, enter the following commands one by one.
    1. adb devices
      1. If this command returns a list of attached devices with a code, that means your phone’s connect has been established.
    2. adb reboot bootloader
      1. This command will reboot your phone into the bootloader mode.
    3. fastboot devices
      1. This command will confirm the connection in bootloader mode.
    4. fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
      1. This will flash the TWRP recovery.img file that you renamed to recovery.img
    5. fastboot reboot recovery
      1. This will reboot your phone into the newly installed TWRP.

Rooting the Xiaomi Redmi 5A

  1. Now disconnect your phone from your PC.
  2. In the TWRP recovery, tap Install > Install Image > Locate Lazyflasher > Select this file > Swipe screen to flash.
  3. After flashing this file, get back to the main menu in TWRP.
  4. Tap Install > Locate and select SuperSU.zip or Magisk  file > Swipe screen to flash.
  5. Flashing SuperSU will root your phone. You can reboot the system now.
  6. That’s all.
