Install CWM Recovery & Root Sony Xperia M Dual C2004/C2005 Running 15.5.A.0.18 Firmware

Few days back Sony updated it’s mid-range device Xperia M to latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean firmware as it promised its users. Sony has adapted a very nice nature of not delaying the Android updates anymore and it’s taking lead over other smartphone manufacturers in this department. The Software department of Sony is quite active and is also paving ways for the developers to stay even more active. There’s a plenty of device which got updated to the latest versions of Android exactly as Sony scheduled and told the people earlier in 2013.

The new firmware for Sony Xperia M Dual is based on the build number 15.5.A.0.18. You can either update your device via OTA, through Sony PC Companion or manually using Sony Flashtool and FTF files. Once you update, you may want to install CWM recovery on your Sony Xperia M Dual and gain root access. If you haven’t started looking out much yet, this post might be able to save some precious minutes of yours. We’ll be install ClockworkMod 6.0.4.7 on Sony Xperia M Dual C2004/C2005 running latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean 15.5.A.0.18 firmware and also how you can root it. All you need to do is, you got to move ahead with us and follow this step by step guide carefully.

Before we head towards the installation instructions, I’m assuming that some of you might be new to a custom recovery installation and might not be even familiar with its use. To overcome this, we will first have a look on a brief introduction of a custom recovery that is CWM in our case and also we’ll be over-viewing the advantages and use of root access.

A custom recovery allows you to install custom roms, mods etc. Along with these, you can make a Nandroid backup, this helps you a lot as you can move back to the previous working state of your phone at any time you want if you have backed up your current system. In some cases, to root the phone you need to flash SuperSu.zip file in the custom recovery, having installed the recovery may help you while in some casesto install the recovery easily, you need to have the phone rooted. You can also wipe cache and dalvik cache of your phone using a custom recovery.

Rooting your phone gives you complete access over all the data which is apparently locked by the manufacturers. This includes removal of the factory restrictions and making changes to the internal system and the operating system. Gaining the root access gives you the privileges to install various applications to enhance the performance of your device, allows you to remove the built-in applications/programs, helps you to upgrade the battery life of your device & install the apps which require the root access for the proper functionality and modify your device in so many other ways e.g using mods and custom roms. By installing custom recovery, you can flash custom roms in the phone easily. Custom recovery also let’s you backup your current rom and restore it in case of any mishap. There is a laundry list of things you can do after having your device rooted and installed the custom recovery, now once you’re rooted and have installed custom recovery, go ahead and enjoy it on your phone. Pre Requisites:

      1. The CWM recovery is only for Xperia M Dual C2004 and C2005 running latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean 15.5.A.0.18 firmware. Check your firmware version in Settings > About Device and make sure that it matches the one mentioned here.
      2. You must have installed Android ADB & Fastboot drivers. Follow the quick guide here.
      3. Your device must have an unlocked bootloader. Follow our full guide here in order to unlock.
      4. Please make sure that your phone’s battery is charged at least over 60%. This is highly recommended in order to prevent any power issues during the recovery flashing process.
      5. Backup each and everything on your Android phone as follows:
      6. Backup all your important contacts, find the full guide here.

      8. Backup all your important call logs, find the full guide here.
      9. Backup all your important media content manually. (Copy to your PC.)
      10. Backup your current system using a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) if you’ve flashed one. This is recommended in case something goes wrong with CWM installation, you can use the custom recovery and return to the old working state of your system.
      11. Enable USB debugging mode on your device.  Get it in Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging mode.
      12. Use only OEM data cable to establish connection between your PC and Phone.
      13. Alright! Follow this guide to the letter now.

How To Install CWM 6.0.4.7 Recovery on Xperia M Dual 15.5.A.0.18 Firmware:

      1. Download boot_CWM_Dual_4.3.img file
      2. Rename the downloaded .img file to boot.img
      3. Place the downloaded boot.img file in the Minimal ADB & Fastboot folder that you created using our ADB & Fastboot Quick Setup Guide.
      4. If you are using Android ADB & Fastboot full package, you can place the downloaded and renamed boot.img file in the Fastboot folder or in the Platform-tools folder.
      5. Open the folder where you placed the boot.img file. E.g Minimal ADB & Fastbootor Fastboot or Platform Tools.
      6. Press and hold the shift key and right click on an empty area within the folder, and click on “Open Command Window Here”.
      7. Turn off your Xperia M completely.
      8. Now press the Volume Up Key and while keeping it pressed plug in the USB cable.
      9. You should see a blue light in the notification light of your phone, that means your device is now connected in Fastboot mode.
      10. Now type the following command:

         fastboot flash boot boot.img

      11. Hit Enter and it will quickly flash CWM 6.0.4.7 recovery in your Xperia M Dual
      12. Once recovery is flashed, now issue this command

        “fastboot reboot”

      13. In case this doesn’t work, you may reboot the device manually.
      14. Your device will reboot now, as soon as you see the Sony logo,  and the pink LED, press Volume Up key to enter recovery.
      15. Congrats! You should now see the custom recovery.
      16. That’s all.

 How To Root Xperia M Dual Running Latest 15.5.A.0.18 Firmware:

      1. You need to install CWM recovery first using the above instructions.
      2. Download Supersu.zip file now.
      3. Place the downloaded Supersu.zip file on your phone’s external sd card.
      4. Now boot into CWM recovery on your phone. To do so, turn off your device first. Now turn it on, as soon as you see the Pink LED, press the Volume Up Key rapidly.
      5. You should see the CWM recovery interface shortly.
      6. Once in CWM, select “Install Zip > Choose Zip from SDcard > Select SuperSu.zip > Yes”.
      7. This will flash SuperSu.zip file, once flashing is complete, reboot your device.
      8. Find SuperSu in app drawer now. You can also install Root Checker app from Play Store to check root.
      9. Congrats! You’re rooted now!

      check if it boots into recovery or not, make sure that you properly flashed the recovery.

  • i follow all the steps and i successfully root my xperia m dual firmware 15.5.A.0.18, but when i reboot my phone after the sony logo appears it hangs up.,. it cant even start, i re install the battery and turned it on but still i got thesame problem.,. i cant use my phone anymore, pls help me.,.,.,

    • @antonioayop:disqus that's the connection issue. Please check if your device is properly connected or not. It should be booted in fastboot mode, also fastboot drivers should be installed properly.

      • @usamamujtaba:disqus yes probably because I installed driver one is failed to installed "driver google.Inc. (winusb)". I don't know how to settle this...

  • @usamamujtaba:disqus you said that start again from scratch so I finally fixed my driver and successfully unlock bootload, install CWM and Root... though I had difficulties so action that break my phone but still research2x until I success.. thanks for your step by step guide... Can I ask how to download themes from sony select because it will say device not compatible...

    • @antonioayop:disqus your device isn't broken after unlocking the bootloader, just flash the stock firmware and it will fix. I believe that you've already fixed your device, and I'll let you know about the Sony Select once i get my hands on any xperia device.

  • Hey, I installed the CWM recovery using the boot.img you provided in the link and now none of my SIMs are getting detected.
    I followed the whole procedure just like you explained. Can you please guide me through?
    Will the problem get solved after i flash a custom ROM?
