HTC to release flagship in 2018 that could feature a 4K display

Even after being acquired by Google, the company was not having the best time in the smartphone market, which is why according to a report from DigiTimes, the Taiwanese handset manufacturer is going to be limiting the number of phones it releases next year.

“HTC is expected to focus its R&D and marketing efforts on a limited number of smartphones for release in 2018 as it is struggling to bring a comeback to it smartphone business in the coming year, according to industry sources.

To enhance its prowess in the mid-tier segment, HTC is expected to release a variant version of its HTC U11+ in January 2018, the sources indicated.

Based on the company’s roadmap, HTC will also release its new flagship model – likely to be named HTC U12 – in 2018. The new flagship is likely to come with a 4K display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, and a dual-lens rear camera, noted the sources.

HTC posted net losses of NT$7.102 billion (US$237.42 million) or NT$8.64 per share for the first three quarters of 2017.”

Apart from a variant of the HTC U11+, we might see the HTC U12, which is going to be the successor to the 2017’s Snapdragon 835-running HTC U11+. Once more, we might not see the headphone jack on this device, but who knows, perhaps the company might end up surprising its loyal buyers. The specifications of the upcoming flagship include a Snapdragon 845, which was to be expected, but surprisingly, DigiTimes reports that the phone will feature a 4K display.

The only other phones that feature such displays as from Sony Xperia’s backyard so it will be interesting to see how this decision will turn out for the manufacturer. We cannot say for certain about the price tag though HTC has not really released phones that are meant for the budget friendly people in mind.
