How To Root Snapdragon Galaxy S7/S7 Edge running Android Nougat

Qualcomm Snapdragon Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge have been successfully rooted and here is a breakdown of the entire process to root your phone right now.

Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge equipping the Exynos CPU were rooted quite early. The phones were rooted first on the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and then they were successfully rooted on the Android 7.0 Nougat firmware as well. The only issue was with the Qualcomm Snapdragon variants of the phones. Snapdragon phones had a not-so-friendly bootloader and it wasn’t easy to root by any means. Luckily, an XDA senior member Araltd got his hands on a solid method to root his Galaxy S7 Edge powered by T-Mobile. The method found working for other Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge phones powered with Snapdragon as well. This method made it easy for T-Mobile, At&t, Verizon and Sprint Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge phones to be rooted.

The root roller-coaster requires you to go through flashing of a handful of files. For this purpose, you have to install a modified version of Odin on your computer and then flash a boot file on your phone. After flashing the boot file, a root script will automatically root the phone. The method is safe to follow, but it’s totally up to your whether you want to follow it or not as it’s highly custom. We will go through the steps now to get it done.

Installation preparation

• This guide is supposed to work for T-Mobile, At&t, Sprint and Verizon Galaxy S7/S7 Edge Only. Check your device’s model number under settings > about device.
• Your device must be running Android 7.0 Nougat.
• Your device must have at least 50% of its battery charged to avoid power mishap.
• Use your original data cable to establish connection between your PC and your phone.
• Enable USB debugging on your phone.
• Enable OEM Unlocking on your phone.
• Follow these steps carefully.

Things you need to download

• Download and install Samsung USB drivers on your computer.
• Download ENG-Root-USA.zip file. Extract this file to get the S7_Qualcomm.tar file for Galaxy S7 and S7Edge_Qualcomm.tar file for the S7 Edge.
• Download S7Root_Unroot_SU_2_79.zip and extract and copy it to your computer’s desktop.
• Download the modified Odin3 v3.12 (PrinceComsy).zip. Extract it on your computer’s desktop as well.
• Download VVM_Volte_Wifi_Calling.zip.

How To Root Snapdragon Galaxy S7/S7 Edge running Android Nougat

1. Now making sure that you have all the files downloaded and you have also applied the instructions, start the process.
2. Open the modified Odin that you got from the extracted file on your computer.
3. Now connect your phone to your PC in download mode. To do so, turn off your phone completely. Not turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Down + Power + Home Key. Once your phone boots into download mode, connect it.
4. The ID:COM box in Odin will turn blue now.
5. In Odin, click the AP button and select the S7_Qualcomm.tar file or S7Edge_Qualcomm.tar file depending on your device.
6. Hit the Start button in Odin and sit back while it finishes the flashing process. Once done, your phone will automatically restart. As your phone boots up, unlock it if you have applied any PIN, Password or Fingerprint lock.
7. Now navigate to the extracted ENG-Root-USA.zip folder. Inside this folder, press and hold shift key + right click on empty area and then click “Open command window here”.
8. In the command window, type root.bat and hit enter. This will start rooting your phone. Once done, reboot your phone and you have it rooted on Android Nougat.

For better battery and performance results, install Kernel Auditor from the Play Store on your phone. Open the Kernel Auditor and give it the root rights. Now in the application, set both of your CPU governors to ONDEMAND and tap “Apply on boot”.
