Galaxy S9 will not be the first phone to get the Synaptics in-display fingerprint reader

If you didn’t catch Synaptics’ announcement about the world’s first fingerprint scanner that would be present beneath a smartphone’s display, we have a bit of that press release for you right here.

“The leading developer of human interface solutions, today announced mass production with a top five OEM of its new Clear ID FS9500 family of optical in-display fingerprint sensors. Designed for smartphones with infinity displays, Synaptics’ Clear ID in-display fingerprint sensors magically activate in the display only when needed. Clear ID is faster than alternative biometrics such as 3D facial, highly-secure with SentryPoint™ technology, and very convenient with one-touch/one-step biometric authentication directly in the touchscreen display area of smartphones.”

Notice that? The press release detailed that Synaptics’ in-display fingerprint reader would be present in a ‘top five OEM’ which we were assuming would be Samsung all this time. We also thought that the Galaxy S9 would be the first phone to get this breakthrough but we were proven wrong once again. However, if not Samsung’s Galaxy S9, then which company would get this change?

The answer: Vivo. This might come as a surprise, but an unnamed Vivo phone is going to be the first in the world to get that fingerprint sensor. According to analyst Patrick Moorhead, he spent some time with the in-display fingerprint reader and said that it was extremely fast and would be present beneath the smartphone’s display.

Vivo does happen to be in the top 5 smartphone manufacturers in the world but buyers are not that familiar with the brand because it does not sell its devices officially in America and other developed countries.

With this breakthrough, could we be seeing Vivo enter different countries with a brand new selling point to show off about? Just a reminder, you will never have to unlock the smartphone from the rear panel ever again so this does look like the perfect opportunity for the Chinese manufacturer to show off its good to the world.
