Galaxy S9 might not need a microSD card slot thanks to featuring Samsung’s latest 512GB UFS storage

Samsung’s announcement of the Exynos 9810 for the Galaxy S9 has triggered another announcement; 512GB of UFS storage that will be found in next-gen smartphones. Both the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are categorized under next-gen smartphones, and Samsung’s latest announcement might also mean that users will not necessarily need a microSD card slot.

“The new Samsung 512GB eUFS provides the best embedded storage solution for next-generation premium smartphones by overcoming potential limitations in system performance that can occur with the use of microSD cards. By assuring an early, stable supply of this advanced embedded storage, Samsung is taking a big step forward in contributing to timely launches of next-generation mobile devices by mobile manufacturers around the world.”

Samsung’s announcement also reveals some interesting facts about the 512GB flash memory. First, this will add to the efficiency meter and consume less power compared to the previous-gen flash memory technology. Secondly, it will be able to achieve read and write speeds up to 860MB/s and 255MB/s respectively though this will also depend on what you will be doing on your smartphone.

This speed bump will make phones more responsive, with the operating system becoming more fluid than ever. This might also mean that the Galaxy S9 could be shipped without a microSD card slot. Having this much storage will eventually mean that Samsung could gain the freedom to remove this slot and replace it with better technologies to give the flagship an edge in the smartphone market.

However, adding this much storage will also increase the price of the Galaxy S9 but it is not like Samsung is going to be releasing just a single 512GB internal storage model. There are other variations that will be released. We just have to wait and see what other surprises Samsung has got in store for us.
