Fix Galaxy S6/S6 Edge issues after Android Nougat update

Who doesn’t love to install the latest version of a software on their Android smartphone? Every new version of Android OS for a particular smartphone brings a number of improvements. Same is the case with Samsung Mobile. Samsung recently started updating its flagship Galaxy lineup to Android 7.0 Nougat. Although the update happened very late for the Galaxy smartphones, but as said, it’s better late then never.

Android Nougat for the Galaxy devices brings a completely new UI with a lot of applications revamped. The new OS enhances battery life and performance of the smartphones in a good manner. The update is currently available for devices like Galaxy S7, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge. Android Nougat for the Galaxy smartphones is definitely a firmware you must get as it will not only bring new elements in your phone, it will also enhance the security. The update just doesn’t seem to catch up with a few features that were working absolutely fine with the previous piece of software.

The device we are concerned about right now is the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. S6/S6 Edge owners have been coming with plethora of complaints regarding the proper functinoality of the Nougat OS on their phones. The firmware can cause issues if it’s not properly installed and sometimes if something goes wrong during the installation. Some of the issues seen around include the display of the phone flickering. Another issue is the phone being too slow for any kind of processing. Galaxy S6/S6 Edge users are also not satisfied with the keyboard changes Samsung has made. The phone can get stuck in bootloop or just stay at the boot logo after flashing the Nougat firmware. Another issue widely reported is the phone taking too long to boot up, this issue is quite similar to phone being stuck in the boot screen. The phone may also reboot randomly. Camera failure is another known issue to the S6 owners. WiFi connectivity issues on the S6/S6 Edge after flashing Nougat are also happening. On Android Nougat, S6 seems to be consuming more battery life resulting in battery drainage.

It doesn’t matter what kind of issue you are facing as long as you are able to solve it. Luckily, all the issues mentioned above have a workaround. There is no way that you are going to get stuck because of these issues. We have tried to compile a list of all the possible issues and put it up. Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge WiFi issues after Nougat update

If your Galaxy Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge is having WiFi connectivity issues, there are a few things that you can do to get this issue resolved.

Solution#1: The Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge giving connection failed or unable to connect error might have a wrong date and time on it. To fix this, you can go to settings > time and date > turn on automatic time and date and also select the right time zone. This issue happens when the time on your router is correct and it isn’t correct on your phone.
Solution#2: If your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge is unable to connect to the WiFi in your list, you can try forgetting the network and connect it again. Alternatively, you can try rebooting the router and then connect it again. Hopefully your WiFi connectivity issues will resolve after this.

Camera failed after Nougat update

Solution: Camera failed issue is the most annoying as it isn’t easy to tackle at all. To fix this issue, you can try clearing the cache of your phone by rebooting it into recovery mode. If the cache clearing doesn’t fix your phone, you can try using a third party camera application from the Play Store e.g. Google Camera.

If your phone fails on the third party camera application as well, you will find yourself out of luck as this will point towards a hardware issue. You might have to get your camera lens replaced.

Android Nougat Stock Keyboard issues on Galaxy Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge

Solution: A number of users have reported that the Keyboard on Android Nougat is different from the one they had on Android Marshmallow. The keyboard is less customisable and it doesn’t have many options that they found in the previous firmware. Unfortunately, there is no proper method to get that keyboard back but you can definitely try a different keyboard application like SwiftKey from the Google Play Store. You can also try using Google Keyboard if it meets your needs.

Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge bootloop issue after Nougat update

The bootloop issue is quite common, it can be sorted out by applying multiple fixes.

Solution#1: Clear cache of your phone after updating to Nougat

  1. Right after flashing Android Nougat, boot your phone into stock recovery.
  2. To do so, turn off your phone. Now turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Up + Home + Power Key. Once your phone is in recovery mode, use the Volume Up Down keys to navgiate and power key to make selection.
  3. Navigate to Wipe Cache Partition option and select it > yes.
  4. After wiping cache partition, reboot your phone.

Solution#2: Wipe factory data/factory data reset 

This option may not seem the best choice to many users, but it can really workout at times. Your phone sometimes need a clean installation of a firmware and to perform a clean installation, you need to perform a factory data reset beforehand. If you haven’t performed it earlier and your phone comes up with an issue later, you can try doing this after installation and see if it works.

  1. Right after flashing Android Nougat, boot your phone into stock recovery.
  2. To do so, turn off your phone. Now turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Up + Home + Power Key. Once your phone is in recovery mode, use the Volume Up Down keys to navgiate and power key to make selection.
  3. Navigate to factory data reset option and select it > yes.
  4. After wiping factory data, reboot your phone and wait for a while.

Galaxy Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge battery drain issue after Nougat update

Battery drain issue after flashing a new firmware is something more than common as well. This issue has multiple fixes as well. You can check which one seems the best and then apply it accordingly.

Solution#1: Perform a clean installation of the firmware

Clean installation of new firmware is always recommended as it is very important to trash the old files and data. This also includes the battery stats and logs. If you just wipe the phone’s data or perform a factory reset before installing the Android Nougat firmware, chances are less that you will come across battery drainage issues.

Solution#2: Charge battery to 100%, let it drain to 0% and charge it again – Try completing 3-4 cycles.

At times, it takes 3-4 cycles of charging for the battery to regain its average consumption. You can charge the phone to 100% and then let the battery come down to 0%. Once your phone goes off, charge it to 100% once again and let it discharge again. Do this for 3-4 times and let the battery come back on track.

Solution#3: Use battery monitor and kick-out battery hogging application

Samsung has a very nice device maintenance mode in its phones. You can use it to track down the application which is eating up most of your phone’s battery. To do so, go through these steps.

  1. On your Galaxy Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge, go to settings > device maintenance > Battery.
  2. Go through a list of applications and checkout which one is consuming the most battery in an hour.
  3. Select the application with the highest usage and then tap “SAVE POWER”.
  4. This option will put the selected application to sleep and result in saving battery life on your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge.

Solution#4: Calibrate your phone’s battery [For rooted Galaxy Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge users]

Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge freezing issue after Nougat update

Solution#1: Clear Cache

  1. Boot your phone into stock recovery.
  2. To do so, turn off your phone. Now turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Up + Home + Power Key. Once your phone is in recovery mode, use the Volume Up Down keys to navgiate and power key to make selection.
  3. Navigate to Wipe Cache Partition option and select it > yes.
  4. After wiping cache partition, reboot your phone.

Solution#2: Clean RAM

  1. On your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge, go to settings > device maintenance > RAM
  2. Once it calculates the RAM usage, tap the “CLEAN NOW” button and it should kill the temporary lag.

Solution#1: Disable animations

  1. On your Galaxy Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge, go to About device > Software info > Build number > tap it for 7 times to enable developer options.
    Go back to main menu in settings > Developer options > scroll down to animation options and do this.
  2. Tap Window animation scale > Animation off.
  3. Tap Transition animation scale > Animation off.
  4. Tap Animator duration scale > Animation off.

Solution#2: Enable optimised performance mode

  • Open settings on your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge and go to device maintenance > performance mode > select the Optimised performance mode if it’s not already selected.

Solution#3: Wipe cache partition

  1. Boot your phone into stock recovery.
  2. To do so, turn off your phone. Now turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Up + Home + Power Key. Once your phone is in recovery mode, use the Volume Up Down keys to navgiate and power key to make selection.
  3. Navigate to Wipe Cache Partition option and select it > yes.
  4. After wiping cache partition, reboot your phone.

Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge random reboot issue after Nougat update

Random reboot issue can occur as well if the newly installed firmware isn’t working properly. To get rid of this firmware, you can try clearing the cache of your phone by following the steps given above. If clearing cache doesn’t help, you may want to go for a factory reset. In case factory reset fails as well, the only option would be to perform a new installation of the Nougat firmware on your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge.

  • Just updated my S6 Edge to Nougat and am having issues with notifications stopping my video while videoing tonight. Do I have to totally turn off message popups now? I never had this problem before this update and I haven't found any other threads out there for this issue. I like my popup for message+ (Verizon Wireless), but I will sacrifice if it is going to shut off my camera during a video session. Thanks for any help.

    • @kathleenharting:disqus Have you tried putting your phone on silent? Try this and see if the notification still interrupts your video.

      • Unfortunately, I always have my phone on silent. I don't even use vibrate except on rare occasions. Can you think of any other settings for me to try? Thanks!
