Apple’s plans to flush out Touch ID has been successful, but it might be done at the cost of a smartphone’s security. The iPhone X is the first iPhone to feature unlocking through facial recognition called Face ID, but it looks like Apple’s claims that there is a ‘million to one’ chance that will it be bypassed has been proven incorrect by a 10-year old.
That is correct; a 10-year old managed to bypass a technology company as big as Apple and its Face ID security feature. So how did he do it? A new video has emerged showing that family members that possess enough resemblance to the owners of the iPhone X will be able to unlock the phone’s security system.
In the video shown below, the mother explains that despite setting up Face ID to only unlock the phone when it sees her, her son is able to unlock the phone using his face. According to Wired, it has been noted that the son was able to unlock the iPhone X in the first attempt.
The same thing was repeated on the father’s phone, but only in a single instance. However, when the 10-year old’s mother removed the Face ID profile and registered a new one, the son was no longer able to unlock her phone any longer.
However, this profile was also removed, and was re-registered using a third time in dimmer lighting and guess what? Her son was able to bypass this security measure once more. Though Apple states that Face ID is highly secure, these actions are certainly proof that Touch ID would have been a safer bet to employ as a security feature.
Apple has yet to comment on why this has happened.
