Exynos Modem 5100 is world’s first 5G modem by Samsung

Samsung has managed to pull out the world’s very first 5G Modem today. The South Korean giant showcased its under-development 5G Modem back at the CES event this year. The company announced today that it’s 5G Modem is ready and it is the industry’s first 5G Modem which is fully compatible with 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Samsung has named the new 5G Modem as Exynos Modem 5100. The Exynos 5100 is built on 10 nm process technology. Exynos Modem 5100 also supports the previous radio access technologies.

The company has already conducted OTA 5G-NR data call test under wireless environment. The company utilized a 5G base station and a 5G end-user equipment prototype which ran on the Exynos 5100 Modem. The test took into account real-world network conditions. Such tests will help the company to fasten the development and commercialization of the 5G mobile devices to adopt this latest technology. Samsung has been working with various communication networks to launch the 5G technology as well.

According to Samsung, Exynos 5100 supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums specified in 3GPP’s 5G standard. It also supports all the legacy networks including 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA, and 4G LTE. All of this is being done with the help of a single chip. Exynos 5100 delivers outstanding results. The downlink recorded by the modem was up to 2 Gbps in 5G’s sub-6-GHz settings and 6 Gbps in the mmWave settings. These speeds are about 1.7 and five times more than the data transfer speed of the previous technology.

5G is expected to transform the ways we use the internet. The 5G technology is capable of transmitting large-capacity data and real-time low latency communication. It will deliver ultra-HD videos, holograms and real-time AI as well. 5G will also support autonomous driving.

The Exynos Modem 5100 also has the radio frequency IC (RFIC), power management IC (PMIC), and Envelope Tracking (ET). It will be available for the customers by the end of 2018.
