What’s the use of Odin?

Samsung’s Odin can be used to flash a stock firmware to restore your device back to its factory state,  to unroot the device to remove any kind of customization that you have applied. This tool has been around ever since Samsung produced the very first Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

With the evolution of Samsung Galaxy lineup, the Odin software also improved. The software was made compatible with the latest devices with time, the bugs were fixed and its performance was also enhanced. With the arrival of new Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, a new version of Odin came out which succeeded the version 3.10.7.

The new version carries the version number Odin3 v3.11.1. As mentioned, it is compatible with almost all new Samsung Galaxy smartphones and also fixes some flashing bugs which were caught on the previous versions. You can now download the latest Odin 3.11.1 from here.

Formats supported by Odin

The formats supported by Odin are *.bin, *.tar & *tar.md5. The firmware files usually come in *.tar.md5 format, you can apply these files using the PDA button in Odin. Once you have done setting up Odin according to your requirements, you need to press the ”Start” button and start the flashing process, as soon as the process is finished, your device will restart automatically and you will see a ”Pass” notification on a green background on the top left corner. That’s all!

For your device to work with ODIN, you need to put it in download mode in order to start flashing the files. To do so turn off your phone and then turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Down + Home Button + Power keys simultaneously and then press Volume Up key to continue,  your phone should boot into the download mode.
