LineageOS 16 builds have started pouring in for a number of Android phones. Like always, it’s going to take a lot of time for Android phone makers to cook official Android Pie for their smartphones. If you are eager to get a hang of the Android Pie on your phone a little early, you may consider flashing LineageOS 16. The LineageOS 16 is AOSP custom ROM based on Android 9.0 Pie. Lineage OS 16 is ready to add life to all those phones which have been forgotten by the manufacturers for the Android updates.

What is LineageOS 16?
If you don’t already know about LineageOS, let’s clear everything about it first. The OS was known as CyanogenMod previously. CyanogenMod was undoubtedly the most popular custom ROM. The reason for CyanogenMod to be so much famous was the number of devices it supported and the active development as well. CyanogenMod was later on transformed into LineageOS. So basically, the LineageOS 16 is the CyanogenMod 16 if you want to understand it that way.
It is named as LineageOS 16 because it is based on Android 9.0 Pie. The previous Android Oreo build was known as LineageOS 15. The 16th iteration is the aftermarket distribution, which means it should not be taken as a foolproof operating system. Installing LineageOS 16 or any other custom ROM on your Android phone is just like installing an aftermarket engine in your car. Now, why do you exactly need a custom ROM?
LineageOS History
CyanogenMod’s short form is CM. Below I’ve mentioned it as CyanogenMod and CM as well. Here’s a list of all the versions of CyanogenMod that have been released to date.
The very first version of CyanogenMod was the version 3.1. It was named Dream & Magic. This update was released in July 2009.
I was able to find the release dates of some of the CyanogenMod builds. The ones I found are mentioned next to the Android version they are based on.

- CM 4 – Android 1.5 and Android 1.6 – Android Cupcake and Android Dounat

Why you need a custom ROM like LineageOS 16?
Well, the answer is simple. You install a custom ROM when you need to upgrade your phone. Especially, if your phone’s Android update is late, or your phone is not going to get a higher version of Android. There are many phone manufacturers that say goodbye to their phones only after a year of release. The most popular company in this regard is Samsung. The South Korean manufacturer is the laziest when it comes to updating its phones. Samsung takes all the time in this world to update its flagship phones to a newer version. You can imagine how good it is when it comes to mid-range or the low-end smartphones.
Pros and cons of custom ROMs
So, in such a scenario, a custom ROM like LineageOS 16 is your life savior. The custom ROMs have their own pros and cons. Pros are that you get to enjoy the latest version of Android, you get rid of all the bloatware, the Vanilla Android is something worth experiencing and then there is the freedom of modifying the system according to your own liking. A ROM like LineageOS 16 has absolutely nothing inside. These ROMs do not even have Google Gapps. In order to get an application like Google Play Store in a custom ROM such as LineageOS 16, you have to get the appropriate Google Gapps for LineageOS 16 Android 9.0 Pie.
As far as the cons are concerned, at first, they are not easy to handle. Custom ROMs involve a risk of soft-bricking an Android phone. The custom ROMs do not always work as you expect. There are bugs which make the ROMs unstable. A number of features fail to work. Applications like Camera and Messages crash. The basic features like calling, mobile data, and Bluetooth also fail to work. Before you pick a custom ROM to flash, you have to make sure that it doesn’t come with all the cons we just talked about.

Is there any activity out there to stop the madness of having special images for each model? I mean, we need same freedom on phones as on PCs – you install whatever distribution, whatever concoction of software on whatever gear you have. Why can’t same be done on phones? In this year of 2018, phone is just a computer. I want the freedom to just make whatever I wish with my phone and not depend on someone to prepare a whole individual boot image. Has anyone pressed Google to free us? I can’t stand Android anymore, with all the sickness of previously only experienced on Windows. I want to be free!
