How to Install TWRP on Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus

Android is the world of customizations and almost every Android user tries one or the other customization apps or mods. Most of the mods and custom ROMs come in the form of flashable ZIP files that can be flashed from a custom recovery. In this tutorial, we will show you how to install TWRP on Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus smartphone. Once you install TWRP on Mi 5s Plus, you can explore various ROMs and mods for your device.

The Mi 5s Plus has a massive 5.7 inch Full HD display with 16:9 aspect ratio and 386 Pixel density. It is powered by Snapdragon 821 chipset and Adreno 530 GPU coupled with 4 or 6 GB RAM based on the storage variant. The Mi 5 Plus was launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and updated to Android 7.0 Nougat. There is no further update from Xiaomi for this device, so, you might need to wait a long time before you can taste Android Oreo or Pie. In the meantime, you can try various custom ROMs which are based on Android Oreo and Android 9.0 Pie. Before that, you’ll need a working custom recovery to flash those ROMs.

If you’re new to custom mods and ROMs, you should know that there is a huge possibility of losing data during the process. But with a custom recovery, you can be proactive and make a nandroid backup which is like a snapshot of your device’s operating system. You can restore it anytime and your device will bounce back to that state.

Furthermore, you can install a plethora of custom ROMs and update your system to the latest Android OS. There are plenty of developers for Mi 5s Plus, so you can get hands on many custom ROMs based on Android 8 & 9. The Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus has official TWRP support, so you will get the latest TWRP recovery from their official site. Prerequisites

  1. This guide is only for the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus. Do not try this on any other phone.
  2. Charge your phone good enough so that it doesn’t go dead during the installation process.
  3. Backup your call logs, contacts and SMS messages. Also backup your media content. This is important since unlocking the bootloader will completely wipe your phone.
  4. Enable OEM Unlocking and USB Debugging mode on your Mi 5s Plus.
  5. Use the OEM data cable to connect your phone to your PC.
  6. Unlock your bootloader

Downloads

  1. Download and install Minimal ADB and Fastboot drivers on your computer.
  2. Install Xiaomi USB drivers on your computer and install them.
  3. Download the latest TWRP image file from here. Rename this file to recovery.img and copy it to the ADB and Fastboot folder.

How to Install TWRP on Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus

  1. Navigate to the folder where you have installed ADB and fastboot files on your computer.
  2. Connect your device to the PC using a USB cable.
  3. Open a command prompt window from the ADB and Fastboot folder [Press shift key + right-click on any blank space of the folder] and then select “Open command window here” from the context menu.
  4. Execute the below command to reboot to bootloader.
    adb reboot bootloader
  5. Make sure the “recovery.img” file is in the fastboot folder and execute the below command to flash it on your device.
    fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
  6. It will take a couple of seconds for the TWRP recovery image to flash.
  7. Once the flashing process is complete, reboot the device.

That’s all. You can now try to enter TWRP mode on your Mi 5s Plus by holding Volume Up + Power button.
