Update Sony Xperia Z C6602,C6603 To Official Android 4.4.4 10.5.A.0.283 Firmware

64

The much awaited update for the very first Xperia Z device and its siblings, Android 4.4.4 KitKat is finally here. Earlier today, Sony started rolling out Android 4.4.4 KitKat with the build number 10.5.A.0.283 to the Xperia Z users, the firmware is now listed on the official site of Sony as well. As usual, the new update packs up so many enhancements. Atop is the Android 4.4.4 KitKat tag and are its camera application enhancements, the device gets charged better now, performance and stability enhancements have been made. General improvements to WiFi, Calender and some other applications have been made as well.

The update is on a slow roll out and will take some time to spread all around the world. But not all Xperia enthusiasts will be able to calm themselves down and wait for this update through OTA or through Sony PC Companion. In this case the only way to get this update on your device as soon as possible is by flashing an official firmware using an FTF file through Sony Flashtool and that’s what we are going to do in the proceeding guide. We will be flashing Android 4.4.4 KitKat based on the build number 10.5.A.0.283 on our beloved Sony Xperia Z C6602 and C6603. Let’s go through early preparations and then flash this firmware.Android 4.4.4. Xperia Z

Early Preparations:

1. This is only for Sony Xperia Z C6602 & C6603!

This ROM is only for the device mentioned above. Make sure that your model number matches the one listed above. To do so, go to Settings > About Device on your device and see your model number. Flashing this firmware on any other device will result in bricking it so make sure that you meet this requirement first of all.

2. Battery should be charged at least over 60%.

Make sure that your battery is charged enough to complete the flashing process. In case your battery is low and your device goes dead during the flashing process, you may end up soft bricking your device as it won’t complete the flashing process.

3. Backup everything!

Just to be on the safe side, you may consider backing up each and everything from your Android device. This is highly recommended so that in case anything goes wrong, you still have the access to all of your data and you can restore it immediately. You may backup everything as listed below.

4. Enable USB Debugging Mode on your device.

Enable USB debugging mode on your device. To do so, tap settings>developer options>USB debugging. If you can’t find developer options in settings, then tap settings > about device and tap “Build Number” for 7 times and you’ll get em’ activated under settings.

5. Install and setup Sony Flashtool.

You must have installed Sony Flashtool. Find the full guide here. After installing Sony Flashtool, open the Flashtool folder from the drive where you installed it.Now open Flashtool>Drivers>Flashtool-drivers.exe and install the Flashtool, Fastboot & Xperia Z drivers from the list. [Important]

6. Use OEM data cable to establish connection.

Make sure that you use the phone’s original data cable to establish connection between your phone and the PC. Using a different data cable might result in interrupting the firmware installation.

How To Update Sony Xperia Z C6602,C6603 To Official Android 4.4.4 10.5.A.0.283 Firmware:

  1. Before moving forward, please make sure that you’ve read the pre requisites and ensure that you are set to go ahead.
  2. Download the latest firmware Android 4.4.4 KitKat 10.5.A.0.283 FTF file.
    1. For Xperia Z C6602 [Generic/Unbranded]
    2. For Xperia Z C6603 [Generice/Unbranded]
  3. Copy the file and paste in Flashtool>Firmwares folder.
  4. Open Flashtool.exe now.
  5. Hit the small lightening button on the top left corner and select Flashmode.
  6. Select the FTF firmware file that you placed in the Firmware folder.
  7. From the right side, select what do you want to wipe. Data, cache and apps log, all wipes are recommended, perhaps you may select if you don’t want.
  8. Click on OK, and it will start preparing the firmware for flashing. This may take a little while to load.
  9. As soon as the firmware is loaded, it will prompt you to attach the phone by turning it off and keeping the back key press.
  10. For Xperia Z, Volume Down key will do the job of back key, just turn off your phone, keep the Volume Down key pressed and plug in the data cable.
  11. As soon as the phone is detected in Flashmode, the firmware will start flashing, Do not leave the Volume Down key until the process is complete.
  12. As soon as you see “Flashing ended or Finished Flashing” leave the Volume Down key, plug the cable out and reboot.
  13. That’s All! Congrats! You’ve installed latest Android 4.4.4 kitkat on your Xperia Z. Enjoy

  2. Hello ! Thank you for your great tutorial, I’m planning to install Lollipop 5.0.2 so if I don’ty like it of it doesn’t work I’ll downgrade using this tuto, but I just wanna know :

Do I need to do something specific if my phone’s unrooted ? Or do I just save all my data as indicated above and that’s it ? Sorry if it’s already answered in the post, I did not understand this point very well as I’m not a native English speaker..

  3. @aqualune:disqus you can create SMS, Call Logs, Contacts, Media content backup without rooting. And install your applications later on once again. So you don’t need anything specific to create a backup, just follow the instructions, create a backup and go ahead. Good Luck.

  4. will these instructions with the c6603 firmware work for the c6616? i’ve heard they’re the same phone, the c6616 is the bell canada variant?

  5. Hello usama I want your help
    XPERIA Z C6602 UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER
Right now I am using custom rom unofficial cyanogenmod 12 but it’s buggy it hangs alot.
Now I want to get to back to my original Sony stock rom lollipop 5.0.2
Should I follow this same procedure? to install kitkat 4.4.4 and update lollipop 5.0.2. And after installing kitkat 4.4.4 can I get OTA update for 5.0.2.
Please guide me and help me out

    • @disqus_kh0Vf7YLf1:disqus yes you will get OTA if you update to 4.4.4 (purely stock). You can also update to 5.0.2 directly. Guide is available on our site, please use the update category to find it.

      • THANKS USAMA 🙂
        one more doubt i have

now my device is in unlocked bootloader state
now i just want to know after getting back to stock ROM how to restore my drm keys
        please guide me

        • @disqus_kh0Vf7YLf1:disqus a little bit search on google will get you through this. On my site, I haven’t written anything about the DRM keys, so sorry about that. But there are applications that help you to restore DRM keys.

    • @disqus_Shxv54OfTf:disqus Please make sure that you’ve downloaded the FTF file properly. Also make sure that you’re using latest version of Flashtool.

1- I downloaded C6603, Sony PC Companion(I dont know why did i download it.) and flashtool lastest version(i checked it and its correct).
2- (there is some problem…) I installed flashtool and there isnt device and firmwares folders. Afterthat i installed drivers with z3c option and other flash things too. And I seached again and found it my documents .flashTool. opened it and there is devices and firmware folders. I copied C6603 to firmware folder.
3- started to flashtoolsx64 version. I did what it said to me. it said to me Pluged out and shut down the device and again pluged in. i did that too but when i was plugging in there is an error.

What shall i do that to fix it. Im really bored from Lollipop and i want to downgrade asap… I saw someone has same problem. and you said :

“install the drivers located inside flashtool folder > drivers. This is drivers issue.”

i installed that too. still same problem ! Thats why im asking that.
