T-Mobile users started getting their Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge units few days back. The Galaxy S6 for T-Mobile carries the model number SM-G920T. Unlike At&t & Verizon, T-Mobile doesn’t put restrictions on its devices’ bootloader. It’s pretty easy for the users to tweak their T-Mobile devices and get across the boundaries to get the maximum out of their device. Since the Galaxy S6 sports some mighty specifications, we’re pretty sure that same will be the case with this device. A good news for the users is, TWRP recovery is already available for the device. That means users will be able to root the device as well. Wondering how you will be able to do so? Well, that’s is why we are here at the moment.
For those who have no idea of root access and custom recovery, they would love to have a little bit of knowledge about these. By rooting your device, you gain access to the locked features of your device. Root access also allows you install root specification applications and enhance the performance, battery life of your device. After installing a custom recovery, you can flash custom ROMs, MODs, Tweaks, create and restore Nandroid backup, wipe cache / dalvik cache and a lot more. Having a custom recovery installed and the device rooted becomes handy in many cases, specially when you’ve soft bricked your device and you want to perform some operations using the recovery which you cannot apparently do using the stock recovery. Let’s go ahead now and install TWRP recovery on your T-Mobile Galaxy S6 SM-G920T and root it as well.
Early preparations & instructions
- After following this guide, you will be done with
- TWRP recovery and root T-Mobile Galaxy S6 G920T
- Do not try this guide on any other device. Check your device’s model number under settings > general / more > about device. Trying this method on any other device will result in bricking it.
- Make sure that your phone’s battery is charged at least over 50%. This is recommended in order to avoid power issues during the installation process.
- Enable USB debugging mode on your device. To do so, you need to enable developer options first. Go to settings > system > about device > tap build number for 7 times. You will have developer options enabled under settings > system > developer options. Open developer options now and enable USB debugging mode.
- Use original data cable to establish connection between your PC and your phone.
- While using Odin3, disable Samsung Kies, Windows Firewall or any Anti-Virus if you’ve enabled.
- To be on the safe side, backup your contacts, call logs, text messages and copy the important media content to your PC.
- Download the files properly for your device and follow the instructions to the letter to avoid mishap.

Required Downloads & Installations
- Download and install Samsung USB Drivers on your PC.
- Download & extract Odin3 V3.10.6 on your PC.
- Download TWRP recovery & SuperSu.zip
How To Install TWRP Recovery & Root Your T-Mobile Galaxy S6 G920T
- Copy SuperSu.zip file to your phone’s internal storage.
- Open Odin3 V3.10.6.exe that you extracted on your PC.
- Put your phone in download mode now. To do so, turn it off completely. Now turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Down + Home + Power Key. Once your phone boots up, press the Volume Up key to continue.
- Connect your phone to your PC now. The ID:COM box in the top-left corner of Odin3 should turn blue. This indicates that your phone is connected properly.
- Now click the “AP” tab in Odin and select the twrp-2.8.6.0-zeroflte.img.tar file. It will take a second or two for Odin3 to load this file.
- If the Auto-reboot option is ticked, untick it. Leave all other options in Odin3 as they are.
- Now you’re all set to flash the recovery. Just click the start button in Odin3 and sit back.
- Once the process box above ID:COM box shows green light and flashing process is finished, disconnect your device.
- Keep the power key pressed for a while and turn it off.
- Now turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Up + Home + Power Key. This will boot your device in recovery mode. It should be TWRP recovery that you just installed.
- Now in TWRP recovery, select Install > locate the SuperSu.zip file and flash it.
- Once flashed, reboot your device.
- Checkout the SuperSu in application drawer. Also install BusyBox from Play Store.
- Verify root access using Root Checker.
- That’s al. You’re now set to unleash the open source nature of Android.

After installing twrp phone does not want to boot in recovery mode. it just sits on the boot up screen showing Samsung Galaxy s6 powered by Android. it turns on and works fine but wont load twrp custom recovery

Hey, I had to use Samsung kies to revert back to stock then download twrp for s6 edge and flash super user. This however reverse the touch screen so when you press left side of screen the something on the right side is pressed. To fix that I had to hit #2663# from the dial screen and then hit TSP FW update. Evertime I go into twrp recovery i have to use the#2663# method to revert screen. But that’s the only method that works for my MetroPCS sm-920T1 model with marshmallow.

Galaxy s6 with t-mobile, 6.0.1 Marshmallow
I used cf autoroot, and Odin to gain root access, then installed SuperSu. I then been downloaded Wi-Fi tether router and I was quite happy with myself, got it all up and running.
I then made the fatal error of going into my developer options and turning off OEM Unlocking… 🙁 Fuck.
At this point I’m stuck in a boot loop getting the notification “Custom binary blocked by FRP Lock”.
What I have tried:
Factory restoring through the recovery menu, doesn’t have any effect
Flashing stock firmware through Odin (Nand write failure)
Flashing a custom recovery environment (TWRP) through Odin (FRP Lock blocked this flash)
ADB and Fastboot cannot recognize the device
Tried to use Kies 3 and Smart Switch to “re-initialize” my OS or something. Both failed, saying that my phone wasn’t compatible, and that my serial number was invalid (it was, in fact, correct)
I’ll try it out with the stock 6.0.1 Marshmallow I’m downloading right now, but I’m out of my depth. Any advice would be verrrryyy much appreciated
