On Tuesday, Samsung officially announced the Samsung Galaxy Round. Samsung calls it the first (deeply) curved display smartphone and we don’t doubt it too.
Now, this bend is unlike the vertical bend seen in the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Samsung Nexus S. This is a horizontal curve that gives the display so as to make it look like a half-smile when seen from the top or bottom. (See the images for a better understanding).
We could say that it has been long time since Samsung started working on curved screen, as it has been showing off the Samsung Youm in CES this year and has been making other various rounds of curved displays in the years before.
Previously, the notion was treated as a bodiless spirit or something that could just be fantasized and had no practical existence. Samsung seems to put life into the idea and make it an actual technology.
Design and build:
So you doubt that is “actually” has a bent (or curved.. whatever!) display? Well, Samsung Galaxy Round is already laughing at you with that mystic smile that stretches lengthwise.
However, nothing as to how does it feel like using a curved display phone can be said as we have not yet had our hands on the smartphone. But, yes the curve looks deep enough to leave the device rocking like a cradle. We also doubt that we might face some eye illusion issues while gaming, surfing the net or watching a video. Anyway, we still can’t say anything. We have to wait before we can make any comments or before we can review the device. And lets not forget, we are not “reviewing” the Samsung Galaxy Round as we don’t have the device in our office yet and we believe that it will not be fair with the device to review it now.
It features a 5.7-inch, 1080p HD display; runs Android 4.3 (with Samsung’s Touch Wiz interface ). With dimensions similar to the Note 3’s, the Round is slim at only 0.3 inch thick and weighs 5.4 ounces.
The device comes with two new features: one is the “Roll Effect”. We know very little about it yet and that is that if you rock the phone about its axis, it’ll trigger a glance screen with the date, time, missed call, and battery information. This works even when the home screen is in sleep mode.
The other feature is the “Gravity Effect”. According to this if you rock the device with your finger, it displays a music-focused interface that highlights your tunes.
Samsung Galaxy Round has a 13-megapixel camera, with a flash and autofocus, just as the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The device also carries a 2MP front-facing camera. It is also said to come up with 1080p HD video recording.
Processor, Battery and Memory:
The Galaxy Round sports a 2.3GHz MSM 8974 quad-core processor, gives 32GB of native storage, has 3GB RAM (same as the Note 3), and supports an up-to-64GB of external storage through a microSD card slot. The 2,800mAh battery should aid to a fair battery performance.
Pricing and Launch:
As for now, Samsung has announced the Samsung Galaxy Round for Korea in the brown shade, for the rest, it says “coming soon” (hopefully)
No word on pricing could be heard till now. Judging by the high-end specs that do in similarity with that of Note 3, we think it will touch the price scale as higher as the other high-end-specs smartphones.
If you have any questions about the curved screen concepts and are going through the same situation as I am, like you’re raising your hand for some query and then putting it back down realising that it might not be a relevant question, well don’t freak out. Our staff has somewhat same reaction rounds that it is going through. The reason to it is quite simple, we have no idea about how the smartphone looks like in the hands and we’ve not heard anything that could clearly reflect its features and performance. All we can do now is to hope that we’ll soon hear about it.
We have all our attention stuck to this new phone so stay tuned as we bring you the updates. Meanwhile, if there is something that you know about the Samsung Galaxy Round that we don’t, please share it with us through the comment box below. 🙂
