Following the success of Snapdragon 400 in majority of the Android Wear smartwatches currently available in the market, Qualcomm has decided to bring new chipsets which will specifically focus this area. Despite the success of the Snapdragon 400 due to its amazing processing capabilities, it still had many drawbacks. Basically Snapdragon 400 was designed for smartphones and not wearables due to which problems like size and battery timing were surfacing. Therefore, Qualcomm decided to make new chipsets specifically designed for the wearable market. The new processors will use the Snapdragon Wear moniker and the first chip in the series is the Snapdragon Wear 2100.
LG is among the first ones to take advantage of this opportunity as they went ahead and readily partnered with Qualcomm for the unveiling of the Snapdragon 2100. According to David Yoon (Vice-President of Wearables, LG Electronics), the company is looking forward to launch new smartwatches featuring Wear 2100 later this year.
LG Electronics vice president of wearables David Yoon announced;
“We are delighted about Qualcomm Technologies’ next generation wearable plans, are planning to extend our collaboration with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, and look forward to launching new smartwatches and other wearable devices that bring new and innovative use cases to consumers later this year.”
Snapdragon Wear 2100 will be focusing on markets including smartwatches, smart bands, smart headsets and smart eyewear. Although we might expect it to be used in some cheaper android smartphones and it definitely would have enough processing capability to run normal Android other than Android wear. Owing to the new Snapdragon Wear 2100, we are now expecting the new LG smartwatches, hopefully releasing at the end of this year, to last longer and be thinner in design. Naturally, it should run on the latest version of the Android Wear.
The release of Android Wear 2.0 in October 2015 along with back to back unveiling of LG G Watch R and LG Watch Urbane show that LG is keenly focusing on the smart wearables’ sector. To stay updated wit the latest news, keep visiting our website.
