It has been a very bad launch period for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus as a new report details the winning streak of the iPhone 7. The report compiled by Canalys shows that the iPhone 7 managed to sell a total of 13 million units, becoming the most popular smartphone for this period.

iPhone 7 sold 13 million units in third quarter, becoming the best selling phone for this period

“Apple shipped 46.7 million smartphones in Q3 2017. The new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus accounted for 11.8 million of these. This falls well short of its predecessor, the iPhone 7 line, which topped 14 million in its first quarter. But while Apple shipped 5.4 million units of the iPhone 8, it shipped 6.3 million of the larger iPhone 8 Plus. This makes the iPhone 8 Plus the first iPhone Plus model to out-ship its smaller sibling in a single quarter.”

The reduced price of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were also massive green signals towards their sales performance, as the base version of the iPhone 8 costs $699 and offers very little in design when compared to the 2016 mobile phone.

The iPhone 6s managed to secure the second position, with a surprising entry of the Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime coming in at number three. Apple might have noticed the poor sales of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus and could have reached a conclusion that in 2018, there is a going to be a design overhaul of all iPhone models.

There is a rumor that Apple plans to release a total of two devices next year and both of them will further improve the design the company made with the iPhone X.

What this potentially means is a beginning of the end for an older designed iPhone, but the drawback here is that the materials cost will be higher for Apple, so if it is going to be higher for the company, it will make sure the buyer pays a premium for next year’s iPhone.
