Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime, also known as Galaxy Grand Prime Plus is another mid-ranger from the South Korean giant. Galaxy Grand Prime Plus comes with a 5.0-inch display having 540 x 960 pixels resolution. Samsung has used a Mediatek MT6737T CPU alongside the Mali-T720MP2 GPU on this device. The Galaxy Grand Prime Plus has a 1.5 GB RAM and 8 GB internal storage. There is a miscroSD card slot on this phone. An 8 MP shooter is fixed at the back and a 5 MP shooter is there for selfie freaks. Galaxy J2 Prime or the Galaxy Grand Prime Plus runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

This phone has been around for quite a while. Since it’s a mid-range device, it took a while for developers to shed some attention on it. After months of being in the market, the phone has finally been blessed with a TWRP recovery and it has been rooted as well. This has been by none other than Ashyx. The phone can now enjoy the latest build of TWRP recovery and it can be rooted using SuperSU.

If the question is ticking on your mind regarding the TWRP and Root access, let us clear it up first. A custom recovery like TWRP gives you the access to wipe cache, Dalvik cache and other partitions of your phone. It also makes you capable of backing up Nandroid and other partitions of the device. Furthermore, a custom recovery is your gateway towards flashing ZIP and other files in order to load in MODs and custom ROMs. On the other hand, you can install new features in your phone with the help of root access. There are root-specific applications which can enhance your device in various aspects. You can also give a boost to the performance and battery life of your phone by using certain applications which require your phone to be rooted.

Assuming that you have an idea about the custom recovery and root access, we can safely head back to what we were here for. This post is going to teach you how you can install TWRP recovery and root your Galaxy J2 Prime/Galaxy Grand Prime Plus with the model number G532/F/G/M.

Files you need to download:

  1. Install Samsung USB drivers on your PC.
  2. Download Odin 3.11.1 on your PC and extract it to get Odin3.exe.
  3. Download TWRP Recovery for Galaxy J2 Prime/Grand Prime Plus: twrp_3.1.0-1_sm-g532_5617b
  4. Download SuperSU.zip and DM-Verity file and copy these files to an external SD card or a USB OTG.

How to Install TWRP Custom Recovery and Root Galaxy J2 Prime/Grand Prime Plus

  1. Open Odin3.exe file from the extracted Odin files that you downloaded above.
  2. Put your Galaxy J2 Prime/Grand Prime Plus in download mode now. To do so, turn off your phone first. Now turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Down + Power + Home button. As soon as your device boots up showing a Downloading screen, leave the keys.
  3. Connect your phone to your PC now. Odin should show an “Added” message in the logs and also show the blue light in the ID:COM box. This will verify a successful connection between your phone and your PC.
  4. Now click on the “AP” tab in Odin and select the TWRP Recovery.img.tar file according to your device carefully.
  5. The options ticked in Odin should be only “F.Reset Time“. Make sure that the Auto-Reboot option is not checked, we do not want to reboot the phone after flashing TWRP recovery.
  6. After selecting the file and checking/unchecking the options carefully, hit the start button. Odin will now flash the TWRP and show you a PASS message in a few minutes.
  7. Once done, disconnect your device from your PC now. Do not reboot your device.

Root and disable forced encryption

  1. Now you need to boot directly into TWRP Recovery. Turn off your phone completely and turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Up + Home + Power key now. Your phone should successfully boot into newly installed custom recovery.
  2. TWRP will ask you whether you want to allow modifications or not, you will need to swipe the finger to the right to enable modifications. Swiping the finger to right will trigger dm-verity, if you will need to disable it immediately. Leaving it enabled will not let you boot the phone either root it. This is an important stuff since we want to be able to modify the system.
  3. Now tap “Wipe > Format Data > type “yes” to format data. This is important to disable encryption. This step will factory reset your phone, so make sure that you’ve backed up the entire data at hand.
  4. Now make sure that you’ve copied the SuperSU.zip and dm-verity.zip files in external SD Card or USB OTG, if not then transfer both these files to your external SD Card by using MTP mode in TWRP now.
  5. Once you have the files, tap “Install > locate the SuperSU.zip according to the location where you copied > flash it”.
  6. Now once again tap “Install > locate the dm-verity.zip file > flash it”.
  7. Once done flashing, reboot your phone to the system.
  8. That’s all. You’re rooted and have a TWRP recovery installed. Best of luck.

Let me know if I can help you guys any further. That’s all for now.

      • well, after installing TWRP I tried to wipe data with the result that that I got errors meaning unable to mount. Maybe I should use “repair file system” ? any thoughts on this ? tnx
btw, there is no “Wipe > Format Data > type “yes”

        • @erwinstolz:disqus When you install TWRP, you directly have to boot into TWRP. Do not boot into system before that.

Once in TWRP, it asks you to allow modifications, did you allow modifications?

If so, then next step is to wipe > format data.

In Wipe you find two options, one is advanced wipe and one is format data. – Here you tap format data

After formatting data, you can connect your phone to your PC and copy the files over MTP.

  1. Hey, I’ve installed it but I forgot to tick out the auto-reboot from the options in odin. now whenever I go into recovery mode, it just straight up boots itself. Tried reinstalling it with odin with the auto-reboot off but had same results. Little help please?

Edit: I already have my phone rooted before I was trying to install TWRP Recovery.

      • After trying to reboot my device again after sometime and booting into recovery mode TWRP Recovery is now working but now, my device is stuck into bootloop.

      • UPDATE: I already flashed the custom firmware, rooted my phone, and installed TWRP Recovery. Now the problem’s fixed! THANKS SO MUCH!

  2. Hey Usama. As I said, I have been successful in installing the TWRP Recovery but there seems to be an error. It says: “Failed to mount ‘/data’ (Invalid Argument”. I did the format to wipe the data but the error still occurs. Please help.

    • @ninjaaaaah:disqus Flashing the dm-verity file right after booting into TWRP for the first time is important. If you miss that step, you will have to follow the entire process again.
