Samsung Galaxy Tab E was released last year as a mid-range device. Samsung has been bringing a variety of Galaxy Tab devices falling in the premium category, mid-range and also in the low-price category. Galaxy Tab E may be one of the devices which are pretty easy for users to get their hands on. Following the tradition, Samsung released the Galaxy Tab E in two sizes as well. The Galaxy Tab E comes as a 9.6-inch slate and as well as an 8.0-inch handheld. Galaxy Tab E 9.6 and 8.0 only differ in terms of display, the rest of the hardware is almost the same.
Both the Tab E 9.6 and 8.0 are equipped with either a Spreadtrum Quad-core 1.3 GHz CPU or a Qualcomm Snapdragon Quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and a RAM of 1.5 GB. At the back, a 5 MP shooter is fixed and on the front, a 2 MP Shooter is placed. Tab E 9.6 comes with 8 GB internal storage and the Tab E 8.0 comes with 16 GB internal storage. Both of these devices are equipped with a 5000 mAh battery. This Tab duo runs on Android Lollipop out of the box but it’s upgradable to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
Galaxy Tab E is around for quite a while now. You may find a little bit of custom stuff to play with this device as well now. To begin customizing your Galaxy Tab E, you need to gain the root access first of all. To flash custom files on it, you need a custom recovery. Luckily a custom recovery (TWRP 3.0.2-1 or TWRP 2.) is available for our beloved Tab E which means it’s pretty easy to root it now.

Install TWRP and Root Samsung Galaxy Tab E
Let’s go ahead and flash the TWRP recovery on the Galaxy Tab E 9.6 and Galaxy Tab E 8.0. Once we have flashed the TWRP recovery, we will flash SuperSU to root the device. The on-going guide works with Galaxy Tab E 9.6 Spreadtrum SM-T560, 561, 561Y, 561M and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8.0-inch SM-T377P (Sprint) and 9.6 Tab E SM-T560NU running Android Lollipop or Android Marshmallow.
Preparations
- This guide is only for the devices mentioned above. Do not try this on any other device.
- Charge your device up to 50%.
- Use original data cable to establish connection between your PC and your phone.
- Backup your important data as a safety measure. Use the backup guides linked below.
- Backup SMS Messages
- Also, Backup Call Logs
- Backup Contacts
- Backup Media – Copy your files manually to your PC or Laptop.
- Follow this guide to the letter to avoid any mishap.

Required Downloads:
- Download and install Samsung USB drivers.
- Also, Download and extract Odin 3.10.6.
- Download SuperSU.zip file and copy it to your Galaxy Tab E’s internal storage.
- Download TWRP Recovery file according to your device and model number and copy it to your desktop.

How to Install TWRP Recovery and Root Galaxy Tab E
- Open Odin3 V3.10.6.exe that you extracted on your PC.
- Enable OEM Unlock on your Tab E. To do so on your phone, go to settings > about device > tap the build number for 7 times to enable developer options. Get back to the settings and open developer options. Under developer, options turn on “OEM unlock.“
- Put your Tab E in download mode now. To do so, turn it off completely. Now turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Down + Home + Power Key. Once your phone boots up, press the Volume Up key to continue.
- Connect your phone to your PC now. The ID:COM box in the top-left corner of Odin3 should turn blue. This indicates that your phone is connected properly.
- Now click the “AP” tab in Odin and select the TWRP recovery.tar file that you downloaded. It will take a second or two for Odin3 to load this file.
- Make sure that your Odin3 looks like this. The only option ticked should be F. Reset Time.
- Now you’re all set to flash the recovery. Just click the start button in Odin3 and sit back.
- Once the process box above ID:COM box shows a green light and flashing process is finished, disconnect your device.
- Now again press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power key. As soon as the screen of your Tab E goes black, immediately switch from Volume Down to Volume Up key. This will take you to TWRP recovery now.
- Once you’ve verified that TWRP recovery is working fine, tap Install option in the TWRP recovery.
- Now after tapping install, locate the copied SuperSU.zip file and flash it.
- Once flashed, tap the Reboot > System option from the main TWRP screen. If TWRP asks you to root your device, cancel this option and proceed to the reboot.
- As it boots up, check out the SuperSu in the application drawer. Also, install BusyBox from Play Store.
- Verify root access using Root Checker.
- That’s all. You’re now set to unleash the open source nature of Android.
Don’t forget to backup Nandroid now.

When odin was done I could not turn off the tablet. Finally got into recovery mode but there was no twrp, just the factory options. Can you help? I have samsung galaxy tab e andriod 6.0.1 sm t560nu

In case its not sticking, flash the TWRP again and this time, restart your device right after flashing the TWRP recovery using Volume Down + Home + Power Key. As soon as the screen goes black, quickly switch from Volume Down to Volume Up key, see if TWRP sticks or not.
Yes it said passed. I then upplugged it but I could not get it to reboot, took be awhile to get it to reboot. It was stuck on the downloading screen.

did that about 10 times it only reboots normally no download mode or option to press up on volume key.. I tried holding all 3 buttons exactly so dunno how to continue. I see the The ID:COM turn blue but when i click the ap and load the .tar the red yellow and green highlighted boxes you have in the screenshot above are not filled in.. I click start and this never happens…

So this works excellent, until you have to restart your tablet. When it tries to boot back up you will get custom binary blocked. Can someone please explain to me how to bypass this without loosing root?

What if twrp recovery doesn’t boot up? I got the green light in Odin, shut it down and it booted android recovery. What went wrong?

I guess? It says it has a custom binary now instead of Samsung like before but it still just boots android recovery so I can’t install the twrp.
I guess? I mean, the tablet still works just fine but it goes into Android recovery instead of TWRP but on the download screen it says custom binary where it used to say Samsung.
@danaahola:disqus Flash a new stock firmware and then flash this custom recovery all over again. It should stick afterwards. Before flashing TWRP, do unlock OEM unlocking from developer options.
I have the same problem. I’m on the T560NU, but i’m having trouble finding the proper firmware, and i end up at constantly restarting. 10 minute process is turning into 6 hour process, and all because samsung has to disable adoptable storage.

I finally solved the issue myself, but i forgot to respond back. IIRC, that, too, is the wrong firmware. The issue is, not necessarly the “stock” firmware, so much as you want to get the official firmware for the version currently installed. I assumed you meant the 5.1.1 firmware, when in reality the one that fixed the issue was the 6.0.1, since i had updated mine since i got it. Not sure how, but somewhere along the line i got a nook firmware, which, surprisingly, worked somewhat at first.
Thanks, anyway, though. And thank you for the wonderful article that saved my bacon so i could enable adoptable storage, since Samsung was infinitely so wise as to intentionally break the feature.

Followed instructions, installed TWRP, flashed BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-20160519174328.zip rebooted. Root doesn’t hang around for very long. SuperSU then starts complaining about binarie.
@GbyeMrChips:disqus You need to update the SU-Binary if it asks you to. What problem are you exactly facing? Can you please elaborate a little more?
Updating the SU-Binary didn’t work but reflashing with a later version of the SU did.
I have since reflashed it with Marshmallow and reflashed SU too, now working well. I did attempt xposed framework but that ended up with me having to Odin it again with marshmallow and starting from scratch. Now all good.
I tried this but didn’t hold “Volume Up + Home + Power Key” fast enough to boot into TWRP. Now I’m stuck in a bootloop. What can I do?
Always back up via twrp before flashing xposed.
I have done everything but Oden is stuck It shows PASS! in Green The under that it shows the time which was 00:04 in green as well but the id:com box says 0:[com4] and is in blue not sure what to do now and my Tablet says Downloading do not turn off target

FANTASTIC!! Worked like a charm. Although after flashing TWRP, I had to press hold ,home+vol down +power. then when the screen went black, switch from vol down to vol up, still holding other buttons. this took me into TWRP recovery mode. Was able to root without any problems. THANK YOU.

TWRP recovery for Samsung Galaxy TAB E SM-T375S
I got a green light and “PASS” and then disconnected the tab. But the tab is stuck on the “Downloading – Do not turn off target!!” screen and I can’t do anything to it. Please help.
This will work the discriptions above are not complete. As a last step on Sprint sm-t377p after the green pass light hold down home+vol down+power and right when the screen turns black switch to vol up+home +power and this will boot into TWRP where you will proceed to install SuperSU. And this tends to be an older version of SuperSU that people flash so you will need to go to the play store after and update along with update binary done in the SuperSU app. Hope this helps for anyone atuck.
you should press the same buttons,when you entered in the downloading mode…then you’re tab will SWITCH ON like normal…then turn it off…then press home+vol.up+power buttons…the you can enter into the TWRP mode….

It takes forever to boot. It’s not booting!
I hate this tutorial. It broke my tablet and I can’t even turn it on anymore, or off. Now when I try to turn it on it just says “Set Warranty Bit : kernel”
That means you didn’t follow the instructions right, or didn’t download the correct TWRP recovery. This tutorial works perfectly.
Had same problem with my sm-t377p model. Fixed it by locating stock firmware and reflashing it using odin V 10.13.1. It can easily be fixed, just make sure it is the correct stock firmware for your device. The download I found took 14 hours but worked like a charm, here’s the link http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares

I download the tar file to my SM-T560 via Odin, all good, but can’t access the TWRP to continue, just impossible, tried all, but I always got the android robot with an error triangle and a “No Command” message, so I have to select the regulat boot option. Also, my tablet does not have a OEM unlock option under Developer options. Thanks for any help
