Install CWM Recovery & Root Samsung Galaxy Grand GT-I9082 on Android 4.1.2 & 4.2.2 [Guide]

Samsung’s Galaxy Grand Duos (GT-I9082) sports 5-inch Super AMOLED display having 187 ppi and resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The device is powered up with a Cortex A-9 Dual Core chipset clocked at 1.2 GHz and a RAM of 1GB is also placed under the hood. The device is good to play with when it comes to root required applications and installing custom roms and flashing mods. So, if you are looking to do so, you’ve spotted the right page. We’ll learn today how we can gain root access on Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos GT -I9082 running on Android 4.1.2 or Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Verified by myself – this method works flawlessly!

GRAND DUOS

Before we begin, I would like you guys to take some precautions.

While rooting your phone, please keep it in mind that the Root Process isn’t  official and has nothing to deal with Google Inc and the device manufacturer, which is Samsung in our case. Follow the guide carefully to prevent any damages to the device as the method is completely custom.

Make sure that you have battery charged over 60 % and have backed up all your important ContactsCall Logs & Messages. It is highly recommended in case of any mishap or data loss to backup all your important data. Also make sure that you use the original data cable to connect to your PC, other cable will cause problems.

Things you need to download:

    1. Download Odin PC and install it. – Get it Here
    2. Download and install Samsung USB Drivers – Get Here
    3. Download the Philz Advanced Touch Recovery.tar.md5 file – Get it Here.
    4. For installing CM 12, ignore the above CWM and download this one: recovery-20141213-odin.tar
    5. Download the SuperSu.zip file – Get it Here.

How to Install ClockworkMod Recovery on your Galaxy Grand:

  1. Boot your phone in the Download mode. In order to do so turn it off by pressing and holding the power key or by pulling out the battery for 30 seconds. Turn it on by pressing and holding Volume Down + Home Button + Power Key simultaneously. You should see a warning now, press Volume Up to continue.
  2. Galaxy-Grand-Download-Mode
  3. Your phone is in download mode now.
  4. Open ODIN, connect your phone to your PC using the original data cable which came inside the box.
  5. The ID:COM box in the top left corner should turn blue or yellow depending upon your ODIN version now.
  6. Select the PDA tab and select the downloaded Philz Touch Recovery.tar.md5 or the CWM recovery.tar  file here. Make sure that the selections in your ODIN are exactly as shown below.
  7. odin_explained
  8. Click start, it should take a few seconds while your phone restarts, as soon as it shows the ”PASS” status remove your phone from the PC and pull out the battery for a few seconds. Put it back and now turn it in booting into the recovery mode by pressing Volume Up + Home Button + Power Key.
  9.  And you have the CWM recovery installed on your Galaxy Grand Duos!

Now here’s how you can root your Galaxy Grand Duos:

      1. Place the downloaded SuperSu.zip.
      2. Now boot your phone into the recovery mode. In order to do so, press and hold the Volume Up + Home Button + Power Key simultaneously. Your phone should now boot into recovery mode.
      3. In recovery mode select “Install Zip>Install Zip from Sdcard”, and select the placed SuperSu.zip file and select yes after it.
      4. That’s all, it will take a very short time to flash SuperSu. After the process is done, reboot your device and find SuperSu installed in App Drawer.

Now wondering what to do with your rooted phone?

Here’s the answer for you!

Rooting your phone gives you complete access over all the data which is apparently locked by the manufacturers. This includes removal of the factory restrictions and making changes to the internal system and the operating system. Gaining the root access gives you the privileges to install various applications to enhance the performance of your device, allows you to remove the built-in applications/programs, helps you to upgrade the battery life of your device & install the apps which require the root access for the proper functionality and modify your device in so many other ways e.g using mods and custom roms.

How to keep Root after OTA Updates

The OTA updates rolled out by the manufacturers wipe the root access on your phone. In case you don’t know how you can restore the root access after OTA update, you’ll have to root your phone once again, but there is no need to do it as you can restore it using the OTA Rootkeeper App which is available in the Google Play Store. The app creates backup of your root and simply restores it after any OTA update.

That’s all. We hope that you find our guide helpful and easy to use. In case you got any problems, feel free to leave us a comment, we will try our best to sort it out. Thank You All!

@usamamujtaba:disqus it seems that when i plug my phone into my computer the ODIN program wont read my galaxy, as the ID:COM doesnt turn blue or yellow. i’ve done everything in your instructions and i keep getting the same problem.

    • Usama Mujtaba

Did you try turning on USB debug mode?. Make sure that you put your phone in download mode properly!

      • Anthony M. Lachelli

ok i forgot to do that part.. but now ive run into another problem.. ive done the instructions to install the CWM and when i go into recovery mode it says ‘no command’??

        • Usama Mujtaba

Flash the recovery properly. You’re probably doing something wrong or missimg some steps.

  • Anish Pillai

I face the same issue as @saisandeepdammati:disqus
When tried to enter CWM mode Vol+ + Home + Power. It just goes to power loop.
Have also tried with Chotu’s.tar image. Still same.
Also tried following @usamamujtaba:disqus but no luck.

    Version: I9082DDUBMJ1
    Build: JDQ39.I9082XXUBMJ3
    O.S: 4.2.2

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

    • Usama Mujtaba

@anish_pillai:disqus There is a new method above, use that it should root your phone now.

      • Anish Pillai

@usamamujtaba:disqus Thanks. I had already tried your method. but that too failed.
Same condition. Only enters Boot Loop.
Seems these CWMs do not work on new i9082.

        Any help is appreciated.

        Thanks.

        • Usama Mujtaba

@anish_pillai:disqus The method i attached above, works perfect. Make sure that your phone is Galaxy Grand Duos, Follow this guide to the letter. The screen shots attached above are from my very own Galaxy Grand running Philz Advanced CWM, I suspect that you are missing some step or doing something wrong.

Please do this. Flash a stock firmware, and then flash this recovery and flash SuperSu as explained above.

        • Usama Mujtaba

@anish_pillai:disqus Also make sure that you are pressing the 3 button combination properly to boot into CWM. I also suspect that the previous cwm method has crashed your recovery, you might have to fllash stock firmware and then root and install cwm using this method.

  • Usama Mujtaba

Hey Guys! The newest method is working, as mentioned above. I verified it by myself. Please follow the guide carefully.

  • sandeep verma

i am still getting android system recovery after installing cwm and odin says it pass.

    • Usama Mujtaba

@disqus_P7SPuapF0H:disqus can you please name the file that you flashed? Coz its not possible if you followed the above method properly. The guide is verified and working, find the screenshots.

  • Sush

Thank you! This tutorial works perfectly.
One comment/observation: ODIN doesnt say “PASS”.

    • Usama Mujtaba

@disqus_LgIrQyBiPM:disqus thanks for verifying! Keep visiting our site and recommend it to your friends as well 🙂

Hi, I have the same device as mentioned above. My Files folder was deleted (when my phone had got ‘hung’ a few months after the dt of purchase. Now the speed has slowed down drastically. Pls assist. Chanced to go to a samsung gallery while travelling to pune and they said i need to pay them 350 /- for a software update. Pls advise. Thx

    • @deadlyrocker:disqus you can try the following things.
      1. clear cache using system recovery.
      2. delete useless applications.
      3. root your device and remove bloatware.
      4. if none of the above work, simply perform a factory data reset and flash stock firmware.
let me know what works for you and good luck.

  • @disqus_Xxtvbg0euI:disqus flash stock firmware and recover your device.

  • Mani Bharathi

for me. 1st i failed. the selected Above recovery file, unchecked auto reboot then started. now cwm installed. going to install cm12.1

  • Rohit Agarwal

hi!i have just now followed your above given steps..odin shoed it has passed..and when i tried to boot into recovery mode it flashes samsung symbol again and again but the cwm doesn’t appear nor system recovery.later i directly installed super su from play store and it showed no binary has installed.then i have installed root checker it showed my device isn’t rooted.plz help me out to root my sumsung galaxy grand duos and get that cm recovery too.hope i get a helpful reply.

    • @disqus_ok1tSBbLCz:disqus turn off the auto reboot option and flash the recovery again. Once flashing is over, boot into CWM recovery without reboot the device. To do so, pull out the battery and turn on the phone in recovery mode. This will probably boot your phone into recovery now. If this solution doesn’t work, then flash a stock firmware and then flash this recovery afterwards. Best of luck.

  • paul

after doing this i lost my all data of my phone

  • @disqus_gdZpn1iDZt:disqus if your phone is running one of the firmware versions mentioned above, then this method should definitely work.

  • @disqus_4ypH7QXblM:disqus This guide is about flashing a custom recovery only. To flash marshmallow, you will need to find and flash a custom ROM.

  • Prabin Dangol

I succeeded in installing the CWM recovery and a custom ROM installation. But when I reboot the mobile, it is stuck on the first logo/text screen.
I used the following custom ROms one at a time
    1. cm-12.1-20150405-UNOFFICIAL-i9082.zip
    2. aosp-6.0-20160406-UNOFFICIAL-i9082.zip

What could have gone wrong when I did everything? data reset, cache partition reset, wipe dalvik cache.

    Any suggestion guys?

    • @disqus_GJnfuK3PMD:disqus Did you perform clean install?
