How to Unlock Bootloader of Sony Xperia Devices [Guide] – * Updated*

272

While visiting looking out for a custom ROM for your Xperia Device, you must have heard that you need to unlock your phone’s bootloader first, but ever wondered what is this bootloader, why is it locked by default and why you can’t flash a custom rom image keeping the booltoader locked? Well, we have the answer for you.

Basically the Bootloader starts the operating system of your Android smartphone, also ensures that the operating system running on your device is well and is up to the mark. Bootloader also verifies the working and functionality of your device’s radio, processor and some other hardware components. Google provides a base bootloader for each Android version, but the smartphone manufacturers optimize it for their devices and put the necessary restrictions. The purpose is to ensure the device’s security, and restrict the custom firmwares to be flashed on the phone.

Unlocking the phone’s bootloader gives you the privilege to flash custom roms, load custom recoveries that require the bootloader to be unlocked and do other similar things. Once unlocked, the manufactures take no more responsibility of your device and you have void the warranty of your device.

As Android is an open source operating system, the developments are never going to face a break. To allow the full use of the devices, the manufacturers allow the unlocking of the bootloader officially. Unlocking your it is the very first step towards rooting your phone, you can easily flash any custom recovery using the .img file and then flash SuperSu or Super User and gain root access. We’ll be having a look at a method to unlock the bootloader of Sony’s Xperia Lineup. Although the Sony has provided all the details and method at the official site, I still found it necessary to explain it a little more and explain the method in even more simple and easiest steps. Let’s move forward to the method now.unlock xperia bootloader

Before heading towards the unlocking method, please keep in mind that it is highly custom and may result in bricking your device, as mentioned this will also void the warranty of your device. In case of any mishap, we may not be held responsible. Furthermore, unlocking the bootloadder will also erase your phone completely and you will loose all of your data. So, before you unlock your phone make sure that you backup all of your apps, media content,  contacts, call logs and text messages. Also make sure that you back up your TA partition before you unlock your bootloader.

Note: Along with voiding the warranty of your phone, unlocking bootloader will also break Bravia Engine 2 on some Sony Devices. The only way to get it back is to restore the TA partition. So, If you want to backup TA partition, you need to find a method to root your device without unlocking it’s bootloader first. Method for rooting some Xperia devices are available on XDA developers forum, but you may need to downgrade your device to an older Android version to root it without unlocking the bootloader. If you really don’t care about Bravia Engine 2, you may not worry about it then.

How to Unlock Bootloader of Sony Xperia Lineup:

      1. Install Android ADB  & Fastboot Drivers using the quick setup with Minimal tool. Find the guide here.
      2. Now first of all you need to check if your device’s bootloader unlocking is allowed or not, to do so open the dailer on your device.
      3. Type *#*#7378423#*#*.
      4. As soon as you enter the above code, a menu will open up.
      5. Tap Service info > Configuration > Bootloader Unlock. If it says Yes, that means bootloader unlocking is allowed, else you can also find out if the Bootloader is already unlocked. I’ve already unlocked my Xperia Z1’s bootloader, in the following picture its showing “Bootloader Unlocked: Yes”
        Screenshot_2013-12-19-03-51-55 Screenshot_2013-12-19-03-52-02 Screenshot_2013-12-19-04-12-51

      6. Now in the dialer type “*#06#”, you should get the IMEI number of your phone. Note it down somewhere.
      7. After verifying the bootloader unlock permission, turn off your device completely.
      8. Now open the Minimal ADB and Fastboot command prompt, that you created using the guide above.
      9. Press the back key or Volume Up key on your Xperia Device and connect it to your PC while keeping the key pressed. The back key works for older Xperia devices, while for newer devices Volume Up key will work.
      10. In case you are trying to unlock the bootloader of your Sony Xperia Z1, please make sure that it’s running on latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean firmware. If you tried to unlock bootloader on Android 4.2.2 firmware, it will cause the camera crash on your device.
      11. In the command prompt type: fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version and press enter, you should get a response now e.g (0.3). This step is to verify that your device is properly connected or not. Unlock Bootlaoder
      12. Now open this page and accept the legal terms and conditions by Sony to unlock the bootloader.
      13. After accepting the legal terms and conditions, enter your name, your phone’s IMEI number (Remove the last digit of IMEI number) and your email and click the Submit button.
      14. You should receive an email from Sony immediately, the email has the Key to unlock your phone’s bootloader.
      15. Now again in the command prompt type this com:  fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xKEY. Repalce KEY with the code that you got in the email by Sony and hit Enter.UNLOCK BOOTLOADER 2
      16. As soon as you hit Enter, the bootloader will be unlocked and show you logs in the command prompt.

  1. fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version

As soon as i typed those, the cmd shows < waiting for device >

My xperia z1 is in fastboot mode as shown by the blue led and connected to my pc. My pc is running windows 8.1

EDIT: Nvm i’ve solved it, it was a hassle getting the drivers to install on windows 8.1

  2. Hi, When I wrote in CMD :

    C:fboot>fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0x5B3152EC0D3C352F

    FAILED (remote: Command not allowed)

    finished. total time: 0.004s

I get this error – have you seen that – or you know what is the problem ?

    Regards,

  3. Dear Sir,
I am unable to go more the “xii Step” , as I enter the code it come with saying “< waiting for device >”, I tried with USB Debugging Mode and Without it also with MTP and MSC mode but same result. Please see the Screenshot as I think I have all the Drivers Installed can u provide Link for the Required Drivers for Sony Xperia Z1 C6902 14.2.0.A.290 Firmware, I ll be very thankful, Kindly Suggest.

    • @abhimanyu_singh_chauhan:disqus This is most probably the connection problem only because it is not returning the numeric value. Try changing the USB port, also make sure that your phone is properly booted into fastboot mode. Follow the steps for fastboot mode carefully. Let me know if you get it resolved or not.

      • Apart from this question I have another question I have been doing some reading and I found that people are saying to backup TA Partition before unlocking the bootloader.. And to backup TA PARTITION I have to Root and for Xperia Z1 I can’t root without Unlocking the Bootloader.. So how am I supposed to backup TA Partition and DRM KEYS before unlocking the bootloader?

        • @abhimanyu_singh_chauhan:disqus you will need a method to root your phone without unlocking your bootloader first, otherwise it will be none of use.

          • Ya ur right.. But couldn’t find this procedure as Rooting Without Unlocking the Bootloader has to be developed for Xperia Z1

      • I think it’s a driver problem but couldn’t get driver for Fastboot for Xperia Z1.. I tried searching the Internet but feeling confused

          • I have unlocked the Bootloader.. Driver problem was there thanks for the help.. Now i have a problem while rooting.. i ll post the question on the
“Install CWM/TWRP Recovery & Root Sony Xperia Z1 C6903/C6902 Running Latest 14.2.0.A.290 Firmware [How to – Guide]” page

  4. I get this error. I have c6903 and am running 4.3. Before updating to 4.3 I rooted my phone using 360. I then updated my phone to 4.3 and was able to unlock my bootloader. I am worried though because when I try and install supersu it says my phone is not rooted. I have tried to unlock my bootloader again and get this message. Does this confirm my bootloader is unlocked and my phone is rooted? Or am I doing something wrong?

  5. @disqus_b8aRc1rGuQ:disqus type this code in Dialler : *#*#7378423#*#*. as soon as the menu opens up, select Services info > configuration and see what’s the status of bootloader, and let me know. It looks like it is already unlocked.

    • I have checked this and it says bootloader is unlocked. I thought this just verified it could be unlocked but doesnt verify the status of the bootloader. When I try and install recovery I get nothing but a bunch of commands I can enter into fastboot.

  6. @disqus_b8aRc1rGuQ:disqus I can’t understand your issue can you please explain a bit more? Please send me the screenshot of your configuration in services info.

    • I have the same problem. I was with unlocked bootloader which relocked with flashtool and now i can’t unlock it.I get exactly the same message. What’s going on? please help me

  7. Thanks for the tut, but there’s a problem in my case. After I type the command line with the unlocking key, I get an error and after a retry, unlocking succeeds. Here’s the problem: the phone is stuck at Sony logo and after a reflash, the bootloader appears locked.

    What’s going on?

  8. @ciprirengle:disqus Yes to flash files, root or do anything you need to have installed relevant drivers on your PC.

    • When do you suppose the OTA update will be released in Romania? After rooting the 4.2.2 version, an OTA update will do the job.

    • The only reason I want root on the new update is because I need Titanium Backup to restore important data (for me) like game progress, call history, playlists and messages. Can I restore backed up data from 4.2.2 on 4.3 using Sony’s backup app?

  9. I locked again the bootloader with flashtool and now when i try to unlock it again i get failed the device i already rooted! What can i do now?

  10. @ciprirengle:disqus the update should have reached Romania now. No, after you’ve rooted you won’t be able to update via OTA, you will have to flash firmware using Flashtool. Sorry for the late reply.

    • I managed to unlock the bootloader. I just had to plug the cable into a different USB port. I’m running 4.3 with root. TNX!

    • @disqus_jV9UpFuaqt:disqus make sure that your phone is booted in fastboot. Also make sure that you are using proper drivers for your phone. This may be the case that your bootloader is already unlocked and you’re trying this, have you checked using the code we wrote above?

      • I have installed all drivers and i’m correctly doing the fastboot and allways appears that.. and no is not unlocked because appears “NO” :L i don’t know what i can do more

  11. when i command this fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version it says
i had updated drivers . i press volume up for fastboost mode..
    what should i do?

    • @christossiamorelis:disqus You are having connection issues. If you’re using windows 8, try using Windows 7.. it may not work on 8 or 8.1. Also make sure that you installed Fastboot drivers for your Sony Xperia.

  12. @mohammed_khired:disqus Althought the windows picks up the drivers automatically, but if you’re still facing this issue then please download flashtool, and using Flashtool-drivers install Fastboot drivers for Sony.

  13. can i flash a stock rom with a locked bootloader?
My phone allowed unlocking the bootloader but after i did it, it was stuck in a bootloop and it just wont boot. Any solution?

    • @disqus_pJKNGTwRiy:disqus yes you can. You don’t need to unlock bootloader for flashing a stock from.
and flash stock rom then again try unlocking bootloader..something might have gone weird so it’s not booting up.

  14. can i flash a stock rom with locked bootloader?
My phone allowed unlocking the bootloader and i did but then i was stuck on the bootloop and my phone just wont boot. Any solutions?

  15. @disqus_vUm7O0F75P:disqus rooting is different and unlocking bootloader is different. sometimes you can root the phone without unlocking the bootloader and sometimes you cannot.

  16. May I unlock the bootloader in case the config page say this?
    Bootloader unlock allowed:NO
Already try following procedure, but fastboot app. response is FAILED (remote: command not allowed)
    Thank you

    • @sebinmk:disqus you’re having connection issues. Please go through the comments below and find out how others resolved it, or just follow this guide properly.

  17. all steps done succesfully, but phone is still rebooting (not abl to boot up)…Sony Xperia Z C6603 …help me please

  18. all steps done succesfully, but phone is still rebooting (not abl to boot up) – Sony xperia Z C6603… help me please

    • @speedlukas:disqus you probably did something wrong or missed a step. This guide is only for unlocking bootloader. Please let me know the whole process you did. Flashing a stock firmware will fix your device anyways.

  19. stuck on waiting for device i re checked my connection 4 times please explain the problem… i can not see how others resolved this.

  20. Stuck on . “You are having connection issues. If you’re using windows 8, try using Windows 7.. it may not work on 8 or 8.1. Also make sure that you installed Fastboot drivers for your Sony Xperia. is your solution. where to get fastboot drivers ?

    • @shawnguek:disqus windows 8.1 didn’t allow adb and fastboot to work and there was no solution by Sony few months back, I’m not sure about now. Fastboot drivers, Sony provides you a .init file to install Fastboot drivers manually for Xperia devices when you open their bootloader unlock page. The other way is to download and install Sony Flashtool, using Flashtool-drivers you can install Fastboot drivers for your device. Hope this clears all of your confusions.

    • @mohamedmansoorali:disqus Xperia M is having this particular issue. You need to flash stock firmware now using the flash tool and then you will find your bootloader unlocked. Sorry for the delay in reply, I’ve been away for a while.

  22. is there a carrier/provider that is willing to / or a way to change this Bootloader Unlocked: NO
I have it saying no, but i was still able to get the unlock key from sony, so my thought its Fido whom has the bootloader lock , right?

      • read my question carefully , its obvious that there are carriers that do not allow?

Im with fido its says bootloader unlock : NO

Can fido reverse this or change it to yes in any way?

I have my unlock key, sony provided it to me

        • @disqus_EZOXY5i7mV:disqus Bootloader Unlock Allowed : No means you cannot unlock
Bootloader Unlock Allowed: Yes means you can unlock it.
If you have unlock key, then just use this method and unlock it right away.

  23. after i unlocked the bootloader and put the SU.zip on my phones storage, I then flash booted the kernel recovery file and now im stuck in a bootloop
any info on where to start in order to get out
i have did a factory wipe and cleared all caches then repeated the root process
dont know what else to do
    please lmk

  24. @ankitsunil:disqus wipe cache and dalvik cache in recovery and check it, let me know if it doesn’t resolve the issue.

    • @ahmedsamymoursihashwa:disqus flash stock firmware in your device, it will boot up. I guess Xperia M has this problem, the device crashed after unlocking BL. Once you flash stock firmware, it will be working again and you will find the bootloader unlocked. Good Luck.

None of the necessary folders are easily accessible on mac. HELP!!!!

That command refuses to work for me even though I have input it several times. I was also confused on whether or not I should open a new terminal window because that takes me from being connected to the android folder (and also doesn’t recognize the command), or If I should close out the connected window and start from a new window, which yields the same result. HELP!!

    • @adityakarmakar:disqus you can only relock bootloader if you have previously backed up DRM keys. This is an issue with Xperia M. You will have to flash a new stock firmware to recover your device. You can find the guide to flash stock firmware on Sony Xperia phones on our site.

    • @disqus_lm4IkUoxMY:disqus This is a common issue with some xperia devices. To boot up your phone , you will have to flash a stock firmware now. You can find the stock firmware flashing guide on our site to get out of this issue now. Best of luck.

        • @disqus_AEyvF0mwtD:disqus then check if you’ve installed the ADB & Fastboot drivers properly or not. connect your phone in fastboot mode properly and try running the command again. Best of luck.

  59. how I can check my bootloader is unlocked or unlock state is permitted yes or no, if I do not have access to the terminal? Please help!!
It can be done through the command prompt?

  60. Now first of all you need to check if your device’s bootloader unlocking is allowed or not, to do so open the dailer on your device.

    Type *#*#7378423#*#*.

As soon as you enter the above code, a menu will open up.

  61. I just got a new Xperia XZ and have done lots of tinkering to unlock the bootloader with no success. I tried following steps from Sony and installed Minimal ADB and Fastboot to the same end.

    C:Program Files (x86)Minimal ADB and Fastboot>fastboot devices
    CB512CQ5XP fastboot

    C:Program Files (x86)Minimal ADB and Fastboot>fastboot -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xC6XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

    FAILED (remote: Command not allowed)
    finished. total time: 0.002s

I have dialed and gone to service info and found,

    bootloader unlock allowed: YES

I assumed this meant that my bootloader is unlockable but not currently unlocked.

I tried rooting my phone with a one click app and it failed over and over again. I would like to install a custom ROM at some point or even just modify things with Xposed so I would really like to get this figured out. I’ve read every comment on this page so please don’t refer me to how others solved it because no one has. If you think they do have a solution tell me the specific user. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  62. hai
    can u help me

Now open this page and accept the legal terms and conditions by Sony to unlock the bootloader.
    this page is not responding

  63. On newer versions of Android you also have to have enabled the “OEM unlocking” option in the Developer options menu. If you do not do this you will get the following error which many people below are also getting:

    “FAILED (remote: Command not allowed)”

    • thanks so so much, i know some people exaggerate, but i was trying for 3 hours straight! couldn’t figure out the problem, thanks a bunch it worked

  64. I can’t find my device on the Sony developer website, the XA1 is listed but not the XA1 Ultra therefore I’m confused as to why a guide has been written but no explanation around this issue. Can anyone suggest any help or information?

    Thanks in advance…
