60 billion messages are being sent by Facebook’s Messenger and WhatsApp

Seems like it was yesterday, when the SMS was the most used method of sending messages, now we have quite a lot of apps to communicate with our friends and families. The apps are so much lager in number that it is actually quite hard to keep the track of them, but WhatsApp is the most preeminent one regarding the number of active users. Quite a lot of heads turned up, when Facebook was successful in acquiring the WhatsApp Messenger. Many thought that it may ruin the app but contrary to the common belief, it seems as if the numbers are growing faster than ever before.

Facebook Messenger app on the other hand was the fastest-growing chatting platform in 2015, according to the CEO Mark Zuckerberg at F8 developers conference today. He also added that it is the second most popular app on iOS, behind Facebook.

According to last year’s F8 conference, the Messenger was said to have more than 700 million active users. It kept on showing rapid growth, and as of January, that number crossed over 800 million users. Only few months have passed and it has already reached more than 900 million active users per month.

Given the continuous increase in the popularity this stat is no surprise. However, Messenger outgrowing Facebook’s other platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram is noticeable news. According to Zuckerberg, Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp combined in now three-time the global volume of SMS Messages, i.e 60 billion messages per day compared to 20 billion SMS.

Facebook is constantly developing its Messenger and recently it has also introduced a new Bots for Messenger feature, which will allow users and businesses to make communication in a much more convenient way.
